We continue to try to right the ship, but after a 1-2 ATS week we’re still taking in water. Let’s review the NFL odds in Week 9 and start bailing out!

Swinger’s 2017 NFL Record: 8-15 ATS (-19.5 Units)

I have always been a proponent of shopping the NFL odds early because that can be the difference between a cover and a money-burner. Such was the case last week when I snagged the Bears at +10 that 5Dimes was offering. That number dropped to about 7½ across the board at kickoff and had we waited we would have been tossing expletives from Hampton Beach to Laguna Beach.

However, that was to be our only cover of the day as the Niners proved no match for the Eagles, even with the 13-point head start, and the Lions were nipped 20-15 by the Steelers, which doomed our four-unit pick seeing as we were only getting a field goal with the Motor City Cats. On the positive side of things, my colleague the Woodman is 6-2 ATS and had another winner last week with the Houston Texans, who covered as 5½-point road dogs in the team’s 41-38 loss to Seattle. Let’s not panic, let’s not chase and for the luvva gawd let’s not increase our unit size to simply draw closer to even. Money management is paramount, so let’s look at our top NFL picks this week and start cashing.

Bengals (+6) at Jaguars

This game lines up perfectly for the squares to turn into lemmings and send it on the Jaguars. The Jags throttled the Colts 27-0 in their Week 7 game before their bye last week, while the Bengals struggled mightily to capture a 24-23 win over those same Colts last Sunday. That’s an easy narrative for the public to digest and come to the conclusion that this will be a cakewalk for Jacksonville.

Not so fast, because I don’t trust Blake Bortles against a team that owns a defensive line that can put pressure on the quarterback. Bortles doesn’t like the heat and often succumbs to it. I am trusting that the Dalton to AJ Green connection will get it done and the Bengals' defense will come alive once it smells blood in the water. Road dog gets the cover here.

Cardinals (-2.5) at 49ers

Arizona’s Drew Stanton is the Brian Hoyer of the desert. A serviceable clipboard holder but not someone you really want as your regular guy under center. Like it or not, Stanton will be “the man” in Arizona for not only this week but the foreseeable future as Carson Palmer is likely done for 2017 after breaking his arm in Week 7’s 33-0 loss to the Rams.

The Redbirds have had two weeks to prepare for the winless Niners, and I believe that the casual fan is under the impression that former New England Patriot Jimmy Garoppolo will be starting for San Francisco. That is not the case, and why anyone believes that the Niners will keep this close with two of their starting offensive tackles potentially out and facing an Arizona defensive front led by Chandler Jones is beyond me. I say the Cards win by at least a touchdown this week after watching an inept Niners offense get outscored 73-20 in their last two contests.

The Woodman’s Corner (6-2 ATS, +3.8 Units)

As previously stated, the Woodman is once again beating the books this season and looking to remain on track with the LA Rams at the Giants. As we all know, Big Blue is a mercurial team as evidenced by their trouncing of the Broncos in Mile High as 12-point road dogs and missing their top three wide receivers yet also lost to the Chargers as 3-point home favorites with all three top targets in uniform. This game is a pass for me but if the Woodman sayeth … I tend to believeth.
