With NFL Week 1 just around the corner, Thursday’s round of preseason games affords the last opportunity to NFL bettors flex their betting muscles. Here’s our preview of week 4 preseason NFL action complete with choice picks for your consideration.
Recap of week 3 betting action.
The third week closed with the home and road teams going 8-8 straight up. Home teams and the favourites went 7-9 ATS, while the ‘under’ dominated in totals betting with an 11-5 mark. What will week 4 bring? Here’s a look at some of the games NFL bettors should spot.
San Francisco 49ers +3.0 vs. Houston Texans -3.0; Total 38.5
NFL Betting verdict: Niners finally won a preseason game when they beat the Chargers 21-7 on Sunday, but lingering questions remained unanswered despite the successful turnout in week 3. Niners first-team offense appears clueless, incapable of reaching the end zone, never mind accomplishing something as meaningful as a touchdown. Thus far they’ve only managed two field goals in three games. It remains to be seen whether Jim Harbaugh gives the starters another turn on the field in the final day of preseason, they certainly need the practice it would seem if only to show they can score a touchdown. On the starters front, back-up hopeful Blaine Gabbert has been a bit of joke, to put it mildly. Texans by contrast have had a more productive preseason going 2-1, including an 18-17 win over the Broncos in week 3 that came after a solid 32-7 win over Atlanta. The important bit is both the starters and back-ups played well against the Broncos.
NFL Picks: Texans to cover
Cincinnati Bengals -2.5 vs. Indianapolis Colts +2.5.; Total 42.0
NFL Betting Verdict: The Indianapolis Colts are 0-3 in the preseason, their latest disappointment a 23-17 defeat to the Saints at home. The game was marred by defensive issues, Luck’s interception and numerous turnovers that proved costly. The Bengals beat the Cardinals on Sunday 19-13, marking their first win of the preseason. The night belonged to defense that successfully held back the Cardinals. Neither side has risked too much in the offseason so it’s hard to gauge which way this will go. Best to stay conservative and go with the under in totals betting, a bet that has gone 30-19 in the preseason thus far.
NFL Picks: Under 42.0
New England Patriots +3.0 vs. New York Giants -3.0; Total 41.0
NFL Betting Verdict: The Giants are undefeated in the preseason with four straight wins, including the Hall of Fame. Last week, they beat the Jets 35-24 on the road. Interestingly, the Giants have trailed in the fourth quarter each and every time, yet somehow have managed to runaway with the victory. It remains to be seen how much playing time the starters will get but it’s being reported the Giants will field a first-string squad for some part of the game. Patriots have looked exceptionally good in the preseason as well, especially with Tom Brady under centre in their last two games. They’re more likely to rest most of their starters for this game. But check to be sure.
