NFL Week 2 is in the books in its entirety, so let’s look at some of the overriding trends that NFL bettors should spot next week before making their Week 3 NFL picks.
Top ATS Performers
As we go into week 3, the top teams against the spread include Buffalo, Carolina, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Houston, Philadelphia and San Diego, all of which are a perfect 2-0 ATS ahead of week 3. Of that lot, only Houston are 2-0 ATS as favourite seeing they were fancied in both their games so far – over the Redskins and Raiders. Meanwhile, Buffalo, Carolina, Cincinnati and Philadelphia came through on the spread as both the favourites and underdogs, while San Diego and Cleveland came up trumps twice as the underdogs.
Week 3 trends point to another successful turn for the Carolina Panthers against the Pittsburgh Steelers as they are 7-0-1 ATS in their last eight home games as the favourites. Cincinnati Bengals as well boast a 7-1-0 ATS record since 2013 as the home favourites, which could prove profitable when they host the Tennessee Titans on Sunday.
The ATS Losers So Far
While Denver Broncos are 2-0 SU, they are 0-2 ATS after closer than expected wins over Indianapolis Colts and Kansas City Chiefs. Still, that’s nothing overly concerning as the Broncos have moved up to top spot in NFL power rankings usurping the Seattle Seahawks ahead of their date, ironically, in week 3. For the first time this season (potentially last time – so rare is it to have the Broncos disadvantaged against any team), the Broncos are listed at the 5-point underdogs. Denver went 5-3 ATS on the road since 2013 and 10-6-0 since 2012.
Other teams that are a disappointing 0-2 ATS are Jacksonville (no surprises there), Tampa Bay, New York Giants, Pittsburgh and New Orleans; the Saints, arguably, are the most surprising in this section as they are also 0-2 SU for the season.
New Orleans were matched both times as the road favourites but failed to cover all while losing outright. Most shockingly, they lost outright 26-24 to Cleveland as the 7-point road favourites where most NFL bettors had it down on their NFL picks as a winnable game for the Saints
Top SU Performers
Going into week 3, Arizona Cardinals, Buffalo Bills, Carolina Panthers, Cincinnati Bengals, Denver Broncos, Houston Texans, and Philadelphia Eagles are all undefeated, looking to make it three in a row. Home advantage could be a factor for those teams going for a 3-0 start. Only Denver and Houston are on the road in week 3, but the Texans have a potentially winnable game over the woeful Giants that are 0-2 on the season and seemingly losing the plot fast.
Along with the winless Giants, the Bucs, Raiders and Jaguars are 0-2 on the season as well. Hobnobbing with this dubious group however are (shockingly) the Colts, Saints and Chiefs -- all playoff teams last season. While the Colts and Chiefs are victims of a tough schedule on the start of the season, the Saints can’t claim the same after losing to Falcons and Browns (both 4-12 sides last season).
SU 1-1 After Two Weeks
Week 2 saw several teams avert a 0-2 start on the season, including the Baltimore Ravens, Chicago Bears, Dallas Cowboys, Green Bay Packers, San Diego Chargers, St. Louis Rams and Washington Redskins. In turn, teams that failed to back up their winning start to the season and extend their form to 2-0 were the Atlanta Falcons, Detroit Lions, Miami Dolphins, Minnesota Vikings, New York Jets, San Francisco 49ers, Seattle Seahawks and Tennessee Titans.
Of those, the most sensational results have to be the Bears over the Niners at Levi Stadium and the Chargers over the Hawks, as both underdogs upended the NFL odds. The Niners allowed the Bears to get back into the game late with some poor play and lots of penalties while the Chargers stifled the Hawks in San Diego, both on the field and with some help from the weather gods.
Finally, the Browns, Jaguars, Packers, Saints, Seahawks, and Eagles are 2-0 on the over-under after first two weeks of NFL betting. The Bills, Bengals, Ravens, Titans, Chiefs, Cowboys, Vikings, Panthers, Buccaneers, Cardinals, and Rams are all 0-2.
