Home teams have the 132-101-1 edge over away teams in straight up betting but are almost neck-and-neck with a 115-115-4 ATS mark. Favourites Come Through On the NFL Odds
The Green Bay Packers bounced back in week 16 NFL betting with a pivotal 20-3 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on the road. They also proved the biggest favourites to cash against the spread at 12-points after opening as the 10-point favourites in early NFL odds markets. Meanwhile, Seattle Seahawks proved the second biggest favourites to cash in week 16 NFL betting, obliterating the Cardinals 35-6 on the road as the 9-point road chalk. Seattle Seahawks are now a win away from taking the NFC West title.
Pittsburgh Steelers kept their postseason hopes alive with a 20-12 win over the Kansas City Chiefs at home, coming through for NFL bettors as the 2.5-point home favourites (opened at 3-point in early NFL betting markets). And the Dallas Cowboys eviscerated the Colts 42-7, cashing as the 3-point home chalk. Most NFL experts and pundits had this game as a shootout between two legitimate quarterbacks in their game previews; few could have predicted the Cowboys to drill the Colts as they did. In any event, Tony Romo and the Cowboys were unstoppable as they both clinch the NFC East title and eliminate the Philadelphia Eagles from the NFC playoff race, who were upset by the Redskins on Saturday.
Earlier in the week, the Jaguars came through for NFL bettors as the 3-point favourites with a win over the Titans, 21-13 at home.
Underdogs Punch Above Weight Class
Washington Redskins served up the first upset of the week with a 27-24 win over the Philadelphia Eagles, all while installed as the 7-point home dogs. The upset trend was extended by the San Diego Chargers as the stormed back to win 38-35 over the Niners as the 2.5-point road underdogs.
Although the New England Patriots extended their winning form with a 17-16 win over the Jets on the road, it was the hosts that pulled off the cover for their backers as the 10-point underdogs. They proved the biggest underdogs on the day's card to cash on the NFL trading floor.
Cam Newton and the Panthers persevered against the Cleveland Browns with a narrow 17-13 win. Although the Panthers opened as the 3.5-point favourites, they were bet up to 6-points by closing doors; thereby, the cover goes to the Browns in this game.
The Chicago Bears covered as the whopping 10-point home dogs in a 20-14 loss to the Detroit Lions, an NFL betting line that opened at 4.5-points but swelled to 10-points following the news of Jay Cutler's benching.
In one of the wildest games on Sunday's early NFL picks, the Dolphins snuck in a 37-35 victory late in the game on a punt block. Minnesota Vikings, however, pulled off the 4.5-point cover on the road (opened at 6.5-points at early doors).
Atlanta Falcons eliminated the New Orleans Saints from postseason contention with a spectacular 30-14 win on the road, all while installed as the 6-point road underdogs.
Houston Texans defied the NFL odds with a statement-making 25-13 win over the Baltimore Ravens at home, coming through as the significant +210 home underdogs straight up and the 6.5-point home pups against the spread.
Finally, the Oakland Raiders eliminated the Buffalo Bills from the AFC playoff race with a 26-24 win, pulling off the significant upset all while matched as the 6.5-point home pups (Raiders opened as 5.5-point home pups before the NFL lines moved against them by a point at closing doors).
