Sunday’s betting action in the NFL comes to a close on a high note with a classic AFC North grudge match between the 7-5 Baltimore Ravens and the 10-2 Pittsburgh Steelers in a crucial showdown with major playoff implications for both teams. Game time from Heinz Field is set for 8:30 p.m. on NBC.

The Ravens remain right in the playoff mix in the AFC with three straight-up victories in a row following last Sunday’s 44-20 romp over Detroit in an unusual display of offensive firepower. They are now 7-5 SU with a 6-5-1 record against the spread after going 3-1-1 ATS in their last five games. Baltimore took last week’s total OVER 43 points on its own and it has gone OVER or ended as a PUSH in six of its last nine games.

Joe Flacco threw for 269 yards and two scores as the Ravens racked up a total of 370 yards of offense against Detroit. This was in stark contrast to an offense that is still ranked 30th in the NFL in total yards per game (288.5). The passing game is ranked 31st, but the running game does improve to 12th behind Alex Collins and Javorius Allen. There is no real issues on the other side of the ball with a defense that is seventh in the league in yards allowed (311.2) while posting the third-best points-allowed average in the NFL at 17.2.

Pittsburgh has been living a charmed life in its current SU seven-game winning streak with a pair of victories by a combined six points in its last two outings against Green Bay at home and Cincinnati on the road this past Monday night. The 10-2 Steelers failed to cover in both outings to fall to 6-6 ATS and the total has gone OVER in their last three games. They are an even 3-3 ATS at home this season with the total going OVER in their last three home games as well.

The Steelers’ offense has played at a high level its last three games with a combined 94 points behind the trio of quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, running back Le’Veon Bell and wide receiver Antonio Brown. This unit is averaging 376.6 yards per game to move Pittsburgh to 12th in the league in scoring with 23.4 PPG. Pittsburgh’s defense has established itself as one of the best in the NFL behind a points-allowed average of 17.8 and it is ranked fourth in total yards allowed (294.7).

Game Betting Trends

--The Ravens have posted an 8-17 record ATS in their last 25 games in December, but they have covered in 10 of their last 12 division games. The total has stayed UNDER in their last four AFC North contests.

--The Steelers are 12-4 ATS in their last 16 December games and they have gone 5-1-1 ATS in their last seven games coming off an ATS loss. The total has stayed UNDER in 13 of their last 19 games against a division opponent.

--Head-to-head in this AFC North battle, Baltimore has a 4-1-1 edge ATS in the last six meetings and the total has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in five of those games.

NFL Pick

Recent betting trends for both teams lean towards the OVER on the total line, but when these two bitter rivals tangle with one another, defense tends to take center stage. I envision the same type of matchup for Sunday night with both offenses struggling to put points on the board. I like Pittsburgh SU, but my NFL pick for this game according to the betting lines posted at SBR Odds is the UNDER on 43.5 points.
