In this spot, we look at Week 14 opening NFL betting lines and compare them to Advanced Lines served up by Westgate. How have these lines moved and do they matter for your NFL picks.

Vikings vs. Cardinals
Advanced Line:
ARI -6
Opening Line: ARI -8
After the Minnesota Vikings were exposed as faux NFC North leaders in a humbling 38-7 loss to the Seattle Seahawks and the Arizona Cardinals crushed the St. Louis Rams 27-3, odds makers had no choice but to open the line with the Cardinals as the overwhelming home chalk. Clearly, the Vikings have been punching above their weight class this season but in the face of good teams (by that we mean teams that are doing really well this season as well as established heavyweights) they’ve been found wanting. They were embarrassed by the Packers a few weeks back when top spot in the NFC North was on the line between the pair. Last week, they were routed by former champions and last year’s runners up Seattle. Enough said.

Colts vs. Jaguars
Advanced Line: OTB
Opening Line:  OTB
The game is currently off the board with the question marks hanging over Matt Hasselbeck, who was injured in the game with the Steelers on Sunday Night Football. With Luck already side lined and not expected back before week 15 NFL betting, losing the reliable backup couldn’t have come at a worse time. If the Colts are forced to go to a third string quarterback, don’t be surprised when the Jaguars emerge as slight home faves in this game.

Steelers vs. Bengals
Advanced Line:
Opening Line: CIN -3
The Cincinnati Bengals and Pittsburgh Steelers are set to collide in a highly-anticipated AFC North showdown. Advanced Lines were kept off the board last week as Big Ben was in the midst of a concussion protocol. On Sunday, however, he quelled any doubts about his ability to compete with a comprehensive 45-10 win over the Colts at Heinz Field Arena. The Bengals, meanwhile, cruised to an easy victory over the hapless Browns 37-3, easily covering as the significant road chalk. With home advantage, the Bengals are field goal favorites or thereabouts depending on your sportsbook of choice. It’s interesting to note, however, that early consensus betting is pounding the Steelers in no uncertain terms with a whopping 93.33% of early NFL bets coming down the wire record on the Pittsburgh Steelers as the nominal road underdogs. This game should be really interesting.

Redskins vs. Bears
Advanced Line:
CHI -3.5
Opening Line: CHI -3
Although the Washington Redskins are yet to play MNF and the Bears made a right mess of it against the Niners – boggling the win on a missed field goal attempt that sent the game into OT, only for the Niners to capitalise – odds makers see fit to open this game on a 3-point spread with the Bears to the good. That has something to do with the fact that the Redskins are winless on the road (0-5 SU) this season. That means regardless of the outcome on MNF, odds makers aren’t going to budge. It’s worth mentioning, the Bears aren’t exactly impervious to losing at home. They are 1-5 SU at home. Something is going to have to give in this game certainly.

Lions vs. Rams
Advanced Line:
STL -2
Opening Line: PK
Can the Lions get over the Hail Mary? Can the Rams win a game this season again? One thing these two sides can be thankful for is the fact that the NFL doesn’t have a second lower division as soccer does in Europe, otherwise they’d be relegated into second-tier obscurity. In any event, the Lions haven’t played badly while the Rams have been atrocious over the last month or so. You’d think that would make the Lions slight favorites in this game. Apparently not. For some reason, odds makers had the Rams as the 2-point favorites in advanced betting for week 14. What’s even more surprising, is they were so favored despite a four-game losing streak going into week 13’s clash with the Cardinals. In any event, the Cardinals sorted it out with a convincing 27-3 win. The Lions, meanwhile, saw Aaron Rodgers throw an improbable, last-gasp Hail Mary to win the game on Thursday Night. Given what happened last week, it’s no surprise odds makers have opened this game on a PK, leaving it up to public consensus betting to determine which way the NFL lines are going to move this week.

Niners vs. Browns
Advanced Line:
CLE -3
Opening Line: PK
Is anybody going to tune in to this game, seriously? Advanced lines had the Browns as the 3-point home chalk, which – let’s face it – was rather overly generous, if not optimistic. In any event, cooler heads appear to have prevailed this week with the NFL betting line opening on a PK. Granted the Niners beat the Bears in OT on Sunday, but only after the Bears missed a field goal in the dying seconds of the game that would have given them the pivotal W. It’s hard to put any stock in either team so wisely odds makers are leaving it up to the public to bet this line either way. Oh, and breaking news: Johnny Manziel is set to start. Perhaps, it's best not to come out of the pocket for this game on your NFL picks.

Bills vs. Eagles
Advanced Line: BUF -1
Opening Line: PHI -2.5
Advanced betting lines had he Buffalo Bills as the nominal home favorites in this game, which made perfect sense. Home advantage and an overall better record this season underscored that notion. Importantly, the Bills came through in week 13 NFL betting when they edged the Houston Texans 30-21 at home as the 3-point home chalk or thereabouts depending on your sportsbook of choice. In spite of that solid account, odds makers have gone and opened the line on their upcoming clash with the Eagles with the Bills, all of a sudden, disadvantaged by 2.5-points. That’s a complete fence jump, if ever there was one. Down entirely to the Eagles’ dominant performance over the Patriots on the road in week 13. Question is whether one big win is enough to erase all the shoddy, inexplicable, god-awful losses by the Eagles this season?

Chargers vs. Chiefs
Advanced Line: KC -8.5
Opening Line: PHI –KC -11.5
Would the Chargers just pack in the season and move already to Los Angeles. Advanced lines didn’t hold much stock in the Chargers for week 14 against Kansas City Chiefs, installing them as the significant 8.5 road underdogs. Now, they appear to be a complete write off as the 11.5-point road underdogs thanks to a pathetic 17-3 loss to Brock Osweiler and the Broncos at home in week 13 NFL betting.

[/]{"component":"oddswidget", "eventId":2837191, "sportsbooksIds":[169,1096,93,19,92,238], "LineTypeId":1, "PeriodTypeId":1}[/]

Falcons vs. Panthers
Advanced Line: CAR -8
Opening Line: CAR – 7.5
While everybody is wondering whether anybody can beat the Panthers, we’re wondering whether the Falcons will win another game this season. The way things are going it’s certainly not looking that way. What are we to make of a Falcons side that has lost six of its last seven games and was just swept aside by the Bucs in the divisional series between the pair? Panthers, meanwhile, continue to roll behind a 12-0 SU mark, extending their regular season winning streak to 16 games in a row going back to last season. Of course, it makes perfect sense therefore that the Panthers would open as the 7.5-point home faves, down by half a point since Advanced Lines had them favored by 8-points. Right? Huh? With the Falcons unable to buy a win no matter how hard they try, not to mention fail to cover in their last seven games it’s somewhat surprising that the NFL betting line came down. Then again, they are still the road underdogs. So there’s that to consider for your NFL picks.

Saints vs. Bucs
Advanced Line: TB -4
Opening Line: TB -3.5
The Buccaneers have punched above their perceived weight class over the last month or so, lending a hand to their favorable NFL odds in advanced betting lines at Westgate. They underscored that nod with a meaningful win over the Falcons in week 13 NFL betting. The Saints, meanwhile, put in a spirited account against the Panthers in week 13, albeit a losing effort. Odds makers opened this week with the Buccaneers as the 3.5-point road faves, down a touch since last week. It’s a nominal shift to all intents and purposes, underscored by overwhelming early betting on the New Orleans Saints after they covered as the significant home dogs to the Panthers.

Titans vs. Jets
Advanced Lines:
NYJ -7.5
Opening Lines: NYJ -8
The New York Jets were trading on a 7.5-point line for this week 14 clash with the Titans and after they rallied to defeat the NY Giants on Sunday, they reopened as the 8-point faves. The Titans are coming off only their second home win this season, a shootout with the Jaguars. Still, it’s clearly not enough to send them into this game on lower NFL odds. That said, consensus betting shows early betting is rather lopsided with the Titans raking in most of the tickets, which is as clear as anything that this might be too many points to lay with the Jets for your NFL picks. Or is it?

[/]{"component":"oddswidget", "eventId":2837192, "sportsbooksIds":[169,1096,93,19,92,238], "LineTypeId":1, "PeriodTypeId":1}[/]

Seahawks vs. Ravens
Advanced Lines:
SEA -4.5
Opening Lines: SEA -5
With Baltimore Ravens undone by injuries this season, it’s hardly surprising they opened as the home underdogs to the Seahawks in the Advanced serving at Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook. One has to be concerned though now that the Seahawks look to be finding their rhythm, particularly on offense. Seahawks just crushed the Vikings 38-7 on Sunday, making the 5-point spread almost laughably low in our opinion especially seeing as the Ravens and Matt Schaub are coming off a lacklustre 16-13 loss to the Dolphins on the road. That and when comparing it the line trading for the Titans and Jets, it makes no sense. How are the Jets favored by almost 8-points over the Titans and the Seahawks just by 5-points over the Ravens?

[/]{"component":"oddswidget", "eventId":2837195, "sportsbooksIds":[169,1096,93,19,92,238], "LineTypeId":1, "PeriodTypeId":1}[/]

Raiders vs. Broncos
Advanced Lines:
DEN -6.5
Opening Lines: DEN -8
With Brock Osweiler going 3-0 SU in three starts as the Broncos quarterback, including an upset win over the Patriots in week 12, it’s no surprise the Broncos opened as the 6.5-point faves for week 14’s clash with the Raiders. After the Broncos deposited a 17-3 win over the Chargers on the road, those NFL odds had to swell to an opening 8-points. Particularly seeing as the Raiders have come crashing back down to earth behind one win in their last five games.

[/]{"component":"oddswidget", "eventId":2837193, "sportsbooksIds":[169,1096,93,19,92,238], "LineTypeId":1, "PeriodTypeId":1}[/]

Cowboys vs. Packers
Advanced Line: GB -9
Opening Line: OTB
Advanced Lines courtesy of Westgate had this game trading on a 9-point spread with the Packers to the good. The Packers pulled off an incredible win over the Lions on Thursday Night Football, going some way to underscore their favoritism at home to the Cowboys in week 14. The lines for this game are yet to be released because the Cowboys are still to play MNF. However, it’s unlikely the NFL betting outlook on this game is going to change dramatically. Cowboys are without Tony Romo for the rest of the season. If their winless run earlier this season, when they were playing without Romo, were any indication, we’ll be surprised if the Packers open less than touchdown faves.

Patriots vs. Texans
Advanced Lines:
NE -3.5
Opening Lines: NE -3.5
The stock in Patriots may be falling a touch behind a two-game losing streak, highlighted by key injuries on the offensive side of the ball. However, that’s no reason to panic. Certainly, odds makers aren’t panicking. New England were installed as the 3.5-point favorites in Advanced servings last week and they remain so going into week 14 against a tough Houston Texans side that is coming off their first loss in five games.

[/]{"component":"oddswidget", "eventId":2837189, "sportsbooksIds":[169,1096,93,19,92,238], "LineTypeId":1, "PeriodTypeId":1}[/]

Giants vs. Dolphins
Advanced Lines:
Opening Lines: PK
The NY Giants are coming off a loss to the NY Jets while the Dolphins beat the hapless Ravens. Neither account has made any impact on the NFL odds board as this game opens this week on a pick’em line, just as Advanced servings had it. Clearly, this is another game left for public consensus betting to decide which way the lines are going to move.
