Taking a total betting view in this column, we serve up predictions against projected NFL totals for the entire NFL slate in week 12 and serve up the best NFL bets to spot.
Carolina Panthers vs. Minnesota Vikings
Sunday, November 29, 2020 – 1:00 PM ET at U.S. Bank Stadium
If there’s one thing that’s fast becoming apparent, it’s that Matt Rhule is proving to be a great hire as the Panthers are without doubt a well-coached side, even though they sport an underwhelming 4-7-0 SU record on the season. Most recently, the Carolina Panthers are coming off an eye-popping shutout over the Detroit Lions in week 11, a 20-0 win that featured XFL star P.J. Walker making his first NFL debut as the backup to Teddy Bridgewater.
It was a great win for the undrafted signal caller, as well a satisfying team win for a side that’s faced its fair share of challenges this season. How much of it was also down to the Lions’ own injury woes or to their perceptible lack of fight under three-year head coach Matt Patricia, who is nearing his sell-by date, is up for debate though. The Panthers won’t be apologizing for the DUD, no matter how they got it.
It’s uncertain whether Teddy Bridgewater will be back this Sunday, after sitting out last week to nurse a mild MCL strain. Walker’s stellar debut nevertheless gives Rhule options on offense that he can be confident about ahead of week 12, when they’re set to the face another NFC North opponent that is struggling this season.
The Minnesota Vikings have had a slew of problems, not least of which was a slow start to the season. Recent weeks have seen Kirk Cousins and Co. perk up after a 1-3 SU start. They’ve won four of their last seven games, including a statement win over divisional rivals Green Bay Packers. However, last Sunday saw the Vikings take a step back again with a surprising 31-28 loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday. A loss that snapped a three-game winning streak, and, perhaps even, will likely make any late-season push for the playoffs that much more difficult.
Since the weekend, Mike Zimmer’s side received another blow in the form of a positive covid-19 test result for star wide-receiver Adam Thielen, who is Cousins’ go-to target of choice. As yet, it remains unknown whether Thielen will be cleared to play on Sunday – the Vikings offense isn’t nearly as potent without Thielen.
On a good day, with all things being equal, this game could potentially deliver a cracking showdown. However, with all the uncertainty about the fitness and health of key players on offense, we’re diving on the UNDER for this NFL pick.
Arizona Cardinals vs. New England Patriots
Sunday, November 29, 2020 - 1:00 PM ET at Gillette Stadium
Both the Cardinals and Patriots are coming off disappointing losses in week 12: the Cardinals fell to divisional foes, Seattle Seahawks, in a 28-21 defeat on Thursday night, while the Patriots were dealt a 27-20 loss by the Texans. Something’s gotta give in what is proving to be a tightly billed contest across sports betting sites.
Kyler Murray suffered a shoulder/arm injury during last week’s game which has him listed as day-to-day. However, there’s hope that the extra time this week that he’s had to recover will be to his advantage. Murray is one of the exciting young players in the game today, a fact that he underscored with a sublime Hail Mary pass to beat the Buffalo Bills two weeks ago.
Cam Newton and the Patriots got off to a promising 2-2 SU start, but since Newton’s covid-19 experience, the Patriots have gone 2-4 SU – a run of form that is encompassed by offensive struggles. Indeed, the UNDER has cashed in 4 of New England’s last 6 games. One week, the Patriots beat the Ravens, the next they lose to the Texans. It’s impossible to tell what to expect from the Patriots in any given week.
That said, there is enough talent in both teams to deliver a cracking game that could go above projected expectations. As such, a small wager on the OVER is the recommended best bet.
Miami Dolphins vs. New York Jets
Sunday, November 29, 2020 - 1:00 PM ET at MetLife Stadium
Adam Gase and the Jets were laid to waste in the first meeting with the Dolphins this season, which was also the last game that Ryan Fitzpatrick started as he led his side to a 24-0 shutout win over the Jets. Since then, Brian Flores has passed the baton on to Tua Tagovailoa; and the Jets have been playing under seasoned veteran quarterback Joe Flacco, while Sam Darnold nurses a shoulder injury.
Tua Tagovailoa has led the Dolphins to a 3-1 SU start, but the positive run of form isn’t down to his offensive prowess. The Dolphins defense has stepped up spectacularly, taking much of the pressure off of the first-year signal caller. On the flip side, a change in quarterback hasn’t changed the Jets’ fortunes, as they’re losing ways continues. One area that has seen improvement is on the offensive side of the ball. The Jets have been able to put up points in recent weeks.
Last week Flores yanked Tagovailoa out of the game, as he was largely ineffective against a Broncos defense that meant business. Whether that rattles the young starter, remains to be seen Certainly, Flores has shown he’s not averse to pulling the trigger when it comes to his quarterbacks.
All told, this game sets up intriguingly on the NFL odds board for week 12. Key moving parts have changed, if the teams haven’t. This time, this should be a more competitive, closely fought affair between two sides that have no love for each other.
Kansas City Chiefs vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Sunday, November 29, 2020 - 4:25 PM ET at Raymond James Stadium
By all accounts, the marquee showdown between the Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers is being billed as a veritable shootout between two of the most popular quarterbacks in the league: Patrick Mahomes and Tom Brady. The projected total trading currently is steadily climbing on the odds board, after opening on 50 points or thereabouts depending on the choice top-rated sportsbook.
The Mahomes-Brady rivalry is becoming one of the most compelling in the recent game, a right battle between the young and the old. Last season, Mahomes finally got the measure of Brady at the Foxboro, beating the veteran signal caller for the first time in his career after losing both meetings in 2018.
This time around, their matchup will set up differently. Mainly because Tom Brady is with Tampa Bay now and not at New England. Bruce Arians and Todd Bowles therefor will have their work cut out to figure out how to stop Mahomes, who can put up points in a hurry. Bill Belichick ran out of ideas last season and he’s one of the best defensive minds in the game. Then there’s the short turnaround to consider for this game, a short week after the Bucs fell to the Rams on Monday night.
Lifetime, Brady has the 2-1 SU edge over Mahomes but that score could draw level if Mahomes has his way on Sunday. And with both sides serving up enviable offensive weapons, there’s every reason to expect this game to be a total shootout between these two stellar quarterbacks. Shade the OVER for week 12 NFL picks before the number gets too high.
