Preseason Week 1 Game-by-Game Moneyline Preview & Predictions

Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. Philadelphia Eagles

Both the Bucs and Eagles struggled last year, but the former were left more positive about the future. The latter, not so much. Many NFL insiders are quietly excited about the Bucs and Jameis Winston, youth movement and depth is beginning to shine as brightly as the sun in Tampa. Eagles’ are still a bit of a question mark. Where this pair might share similar tendencies is on defense, an area that begged improvement last season. As such, the total hangs on 37 with most sportsbooks. Consider the backups will see most of the play here that total could be breached. The best current line found trading is 36.5 with BetOnline, and we’re going with the OVER on our NFL picks.

NFL Picks: OVER 36.5 -110 at BetOnline

 Washington Redskins vs. Atlanta Falcons

The total for this game is amongst the highest on the NFL odds board, for good reason. Both offenses can light up and move the ball well. Thing is the starters are hardly likely to see more than a quarter of the play here so the question NFL bettors must consider whether 37-points is an adequate expectation for the backups to crack? Is it too high? Consider both defenses can be a bit thin, especially as the game whittles down to the second and third string teams. Could be that there is very little resistance, after all. Best current line available is 36.5-points with 5Dimes. That half-a-point could be all the difference.

NFL Picks: OVER 36.5 -110 at 5Dimes

Carolina Panthers vs. Baltimore Ravens

Of all the games on the NFL odds board this one is a tough nut to crack. We know how good the Panthers are – they went all the way to the Super Bowl last season. We also know how good the Ravens can be, albeit they weren’t so hot last term. This is a matchup of a team that has very little to prove and another that is keen to bounce back. The onus is on the latter, you could say. Of course, play in the preseason comes down to the second and third units, in which both teams have good depth on the defensive side of the ball. Latest NFL odds hang the total for this game at 36.5 with most sports betting outlets, which does seem a bit high by our reckoning. We expect a low scoring game with the defenses ruling the field.

NFL Picks: UNDER 36.5 -107 at Pinnacle

Jacksonville Jaguars vs. NY Jets

The total for this game is anywhere from 36 to 36.5, depending on your choice sportsbook. As one of the lower totals on the NFL odds board, the implication is a low-scoring affair. Or so it seems. Consider Todd Bowles and the Jets are not going to take too many risks, keen as they are on building on the 10-6 SU record that saw them narrowly miss the playoffs last term it’ll be important that the veterans get some play but not overly to avoid risk of injury. Jaguars are a young team that many have on the rise. We’re of two minds for this game, as it seems the public is too with betting split 50-50 on the OVER and UNDER.

NFL Picks: UNDER 36.5 -105 at Bet Cris

New Orleans Saints vs. New England Patriots

Saints and Patriots, respectively, are synonymous for their elite quarterback and high-octane offense. It should not be surprising, therefore, that NFL bettors are pounding the OVER for this game, which is set to 39 with most bookmakers. Some books go as high as 39.5. It’s the highest total in week 1 of the preseason. But this is the preseason and the starters will get limited play, so it’s debatable whether this game will crack the high total. Last year, the pair combined for a 26-24 account in week 2 of the preseason with Garoppolo taking the bulk of the play – he went 28-of-33 for 269 yards and a 1 TD and 1 Interception.

NFL Picks: OVER 39 -107 Pinnacle

Denver Broncos vs. Chicago Bears

Chicago Bears should approach this game with a bit more intensity than the defending Super Bowl champions need to. The Bears are in development mode with second-year head coach John Fox, who knows this Broncos team rather well after spending a stint in Denver. We have the Bears winning this game, which is trading on a tight NFL betting line both SU and ATS (pick’em to -1 for the Bears with most sportsbooks). Given this NFL betting outlook, the UNDER seems to be the preferred choice with most NFL bettors and we’re of a mind to agree.

NFL Picks: UNDER 35 -110 at Heritage

[/]{"component":"oddswidget", "eventId":3010748, "sportsbooksIds":[19,1096,999993,227,169], "LineTypeId":3, "PeriodTypeId":1 }[/]

Detroit Lions vs. Pittsburgh Steelers

Injuries cost Pittsburgh their playoff bid last term. They’re going to want to get on and off the field in one piece. Lions are looking to bounce back after a disappointing 2015 account, but they’ve lost key players and are undergoing some changes. That leaves a lot up in the air, but our feeling is that this is going to be a cautious affair for both teams. If we take a page from the spread, which is set to a field goal advantage for the Steelers, the assumption appears to be for a bit of a wide open contest. Still, the total is rather low at 35.5 with most sportsbooks.

NFL Picks: UNDER 35.5 -107 Pinnacle

[/]{"component":"oddswidget", "eventId":3010745, "sportsbooksIds":[19,1096,999993,227,169], "LineTypeId":3, "PeriodTypeId":1 }[/]

Miami Dolphins vs. NY Giants

The Dolphins and Giants collide in a game that will feature the debut of two new head coaches in the league. It’ll be interesting to see how these coaches approach the preseason. There’s a lot of individual talent on both rosters, which only makes their respective struggles in the last couple of seasons somewhat mind blowing. The big question for the Dolphins will be the quarterback play of Ryan Tannehill, who took a step backward last term. We’re not too high on the backups either so the Dolphins might struggle to put up the points. Their defense is no slouch, though, and should give the Giants a run for their money. Still, if Eli Manning and Ryan Nassib light up with all the weapons they have at their disposal on the offense, this game could crack the total.

NFL Picks: OVER 36.5 -110 at William Hill

[/]{"component":"oddswidget", "eventId":3010735, "sportsbooksIds":[19,1096,999993,227,169], "LineTypeId":3, "PeriodTypeId":1 }[/]

Minnesota Vikings vs. Cincinnati Bengals

The clash between the Vikings and Bengals hangs on one of the lowest totals (35) in the NFL betting market, and, importantly, the UNDER seems to be the popular NFL pick. Teddy Bridgewater and the Vikings aren’t known for an explosive offense but they take the preseason seriously. Last term, they went 4-1 SU in the preseason, opening with a win over the Steelers in the Hall of Fame game before going on to three consecutive wins (Tampa, Oakland and Dallas) and a loss in their final outing (l. Tennessee). Three of the five games cracked the OVER. Bengals will be more cautious, especially with Andy Dalton. Losing their star quarterback to injury late in the season all but ended their playoff bid in one fell swoop. They won’t risk him against a stout Vikings defense, one would think. Backup AJ McCarron, therefore, should see the bulk of play. He might take a shine to the opportunity and he does like to back himself doesn’t he. This game could go either way, which makes it a tossup on our NFL picks.

NFL Picks: OVER 35 -110 5Dimes

 Oakland Raiders vs. Arizona Cardinals

This game could very well be a right cracker in our opinion. Oakland finally has a team to be proud of while Arizona already knows they’ve got a real contender in their midst. Bruce Arians and his veterans know the drill. In fact, they face the Raiders last term and served up a 30-23 win at the Coliseum. It wouldn’t be surprising if we have another high-octane showdown in Arizona this time around.

NFL Picks: OVER 37 -110 at The Greek

[/]{"component":"oddswidget", "eventId":3010740, "sportsbooksIds":[19,1096,999993,227,169], "LineTypeId":3, "PeriodTypeId":1 }[/]

Seattle Seahawks vs. Kansas City Chiefs

It’s not surprising that bookies hang this game on a 35.5 line in total betting markets. The defenses of both teams are renowned – one has a pet name too, Legion of Boom. But the offenses aren’t too shabby at all. Heck, quite the opposite, really. Russell Wilson is coming off a standout offensive season in which he put up some dizzying numbers. Seahawks though begin life without Lynch. In any event, how much play will Wilson get? Last term, he went 1-of-1 in the Seahawks opening 22-20 loss to the Broncos in preseason. He might see similar such limited play here too, with Pete Carroll mindful of a Chiefs defense that could knock his cherished quarterback off his feet. These two sides met in preseason last term and settled on a low-scoring 14-13 affair.

NFL Picks: UNDER 35.5 -110 at Bookmaker

Dallas Cowboys vs. Los Angeles Rams

The nationally televised game between the Cowboys and the Rams is a highly anticipated affair. Will it live up to the billing? NFL bettors sure hope so, with Tony Romo back in health and the No.1 NFL draft pick Jared Goff set to trot out his wares before the nation. There are so many unknowns though about this game, which has the bookies rather conservative with the total. As it is, the game hangs on 35-point-total. Cowboys are expected to be cautious after the season they’ve had, so it’s unlikely they’ll go all out. Jared Goff, who is currently listed as the backup, shouldn’t be so cautious. Well, if he wants to win the starting job from Case Keenum, he has to earn it. The Rams aren’t giving it to him, so that could be the incentive for the rookie to show what he’s made of and the difference between playing and holding a clipboard in 2016.

NFL Picks: OVER 35 -110 at Bet365

[/]{"component":"oddswidget", "eventId":3010824, "sportsbooksIds":[19,1096,999993,227,169], "LineTypeId":3, "PeriodTypeId":1 }[/]

San Diego Chargers vs. Tennessee Titans

The Chargers are coming off an awful season. They’ll be looking to bounce back in 2016, but they’re not likely to take the preseason to heart nor this game anymore meaningfully than it really is. Titans will look upon the preseason more seriously. It’s a young team and they need the preparation and practice. With such opposing views, this game could go either way. Our lean is towards the UNDER.

NFL Picks: UNDER 35.5 -110 Heritage

[/]{"component":"oddswidget", "eventId":3010746, "sportsbooksIds":[19,1096,999993,227,169], "LineTypeId":3, "PeriodTypeId":1 }[/]

Houston Texans vs. San Francisco 49ers

Chip Kelly hasn’t settled on a starting quarterback for the season. The mandate for Kaepernick and Gabbert is to go out and win the job. Chip Kelly is a more offensive-minded coach, which is sure to have an impact on how the Niners play. This is a different Niners team to the defensive-minded outputs of seasons prior and that makes it difficult to gage what we should really expect here. On the flipside, the Texans are dealing with some injuries already. That could prompt a more cautious approach. Many NFL bettors are expecting a low-scoring affair as a result, but, call it a niggling feeling, we’re of the mind to go against the grain here.

NFL Picks: OVER 35.5 -110
