Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Buffalo Bills (-2-/42-) 4:00 ET
The Pittsburgh Steelers travel to Buffalo for an NFL-Ex Week 3 game. This, however, will be the 4th game for the Steelers who dropped a 14-3 decision to the Minnesota Vikings in the Hall of Fame Game (no surprise there … as the Vikings are 7-0 SU in NFL-Ex play under 2nd year HC Zimmer). Following that defeat, the Steelers fell at Jacksonville (23-21) before returning to Pittsburgh for a 24-19 come-from-behind win against Green Bay last Sunday. For the Buffalo Bills, there has been a pair of nail-biters! In the first year under HC Rex Ryan, the Bills lost a 25-24 home decision to Carolina, before bouncing back for an 11-10 road win at Cleveland last Thursday night. That was a closely contested statistical game with yardage virtually even.
The Bills continue to have a QB battle between QB Cassell, QB Manuel, and even Tyrod Taylor joining the race. Though HC Ryan is known as a defensive coach, his tendency for high-scoring preseason games must be noted as his teams have gone OVER the total 18 of 26 times in 6+ years.
Though the Steelers will face a solid QB rotation from Buffalo, they will field their own quality pair of signal callers. Last week’s 24-19 victory against Green Bay was costly for the Men of Steel. Pittsburgh dominated statistically, 312-200, but they lost both starting center, Pouncey (ankle) as well as back-up QB Gradkowski (for an undetermined period of time). That has prompted the signing of veteran QB Michael Vick, as the Steelers’ backup behind Big Ben. Though Roethlisberger should certainly get the start and play meaningful time, Pittsburgh will also benefit from the experience of QB Vick, as he gets a long look in running the Steelers’ offense. There is always the fear that Vick, who at times has been a human TO machine, can be a negative for the Pittsburgh attack. And, Tomlin, at 2-9 SU ATS in NFL-Ex L2Y, can be tough to trust with NFL picks.
In summation, the Steelers have great upside on the offensive side of the ball. Should Vick perform to his pedigree, there is little doubt the Steelers could put up plentiful points. Along with the rebuilding Steelers’ defense, the Bills may also get their share with 3 quality QBs at the helm. As a result, noting HC Ryan’s propensity to play high-scoring games, the best play in this Preseason NFL game could well be OVER the posted TOTAL of 42 points.
