Monday Night Football
Once again this week, NFL viewers are presented a less enticing Monday Night Football game than their Sunday Night counterpart. This evening, the 5-7 SU NY Giants visit the 5-7 SU Miami Dolphins. Though each team is tied at 5-7 SU in the standings, the post-season playoff motivation for these teams is quite dichotomous.

With a victory tonight, the NY Giants can remain tied atop the muddled NFC East with a 6-7 SU record, heading into a brutal final stretch of 3 games against Carolina, Minnesota and Philly. One could classify this as a virtual “must-win game” for the G-Men. The motivation for Miami is much the opposite! Though they are 5-7 SU, they would have to leap-frog 5 other teams to garner a Wild Card bid. Get used to the phrase, “with need, you bleed” because that is what happens to many NFL teams in the final 3 weeks of the season, as they fail to cover inflated price tags based on their playoff need.

The honeymoon ended quickly for interim Miami HC Dan Campbell. A 1-3 SU ATS Dolphin start precipitated the firing of former HC Philbin.  Following a bye week, victories against Tennessee and Houston by a combined 82-36 made it appear that the Dolphins were on the correct side of the coaching change.  Since that time, however, Miami has gone just 2-4 SU, 1-5 ATS. That includes last week’s “smoke and mirrors” victory against Baltimore by a score of 15-13 on this field. In that contest, Miami took advantage of 2 early INTs for a pair of early TDs and then held on for a (15-13) victory. But, the stats told a different story. Miami gained only 219 yards for the game, including just 82 yards in the air. It was the 6th consecutive week that this Miami team had been outgained. It also marked a disastrous beginning for newly-hired OC Taylor. With little chance of an invitation to the post-season party, it has left the public wondering about the Miami motivation for this game.

In the topsy-turvy world of the NFL, the Giants emerged on the wrong side of a close decision for the 5th time last week. The Jets scored the final 10 points of the game and won a (23-20) decision against the Giants, despite the fact the G-Men had an overall 463-355 yardage edge. That marked the 5th time this season that the Giants lost the game when leading  in the final 2 minutes.

Final Analysis
It is not easy to play AGAINST a veteran NYG HC Coughlin in the month of December, where he has been like money in the bank (over 80% ATS) when coaching a team off consecutive losses vs. a sub.500 foe. But with the public firmly entrenched in the offensive corner of QB Manning to WR Beckham, it would be a huge mistake to back the Giants in this game. Because with (playoff) need, you bleed and there is no other team in the NFL that has shown the propensity to “bleed” more than these NY Giants when faced with winning a game that is in the balance. I invite you to put the NFL odds in your favor and join me with my NFL picks on the Miami Dolphins.
