Quarterbacks normally win Super Bowl MVP, but that’s not always the case. If you want to fade Matthew Stafford, Joe Burrow, and some of the popular names on either side, who should you go with? We look at the MVP odds for a couple long shots heading into Super Bowl LVI.

It’s always important to think about the fact that there's a human element to MVP voting in the Super Bowl. The quarterback often makes the most profound impact on the game for the winning team, but what if another player catches the writers' eyes?

There are three long shots for MVP that I feel could do just that in the 2022 Super Bowl. They have the opportunity to have a big game and produce some big moments to push their names to the front of the writers' minds.

Here are my top MVP picks for the 2022 Super Bowl between the Bengals and Rams.

Super Bowl MVP Long Shot Picks

Favorite Rams long-shot bet: Aaron Donald, DT, +1600 via PointsBet

Donald is technically a long shot at these odds, but it would be a surprise to no one to see him win.

By now, you’ve heard how bad this Bengals offensive line is — they’ve allowed Burrow to be sacked a whopping 19 times in the last five games, dating back to the regular season, and that may even be a bit generous to the line given the way Burrow has been able to evade pressure and make throws on the run.

Donald qualifies as one Rams defender who will be a beneficiary of the human element of this vote as a three-time Defensive Player of the Year, and former Defensive Rookie of the Year. He is also in many ways the face of the Rams' successful roster build. He'll give writers a reason to vote for him with a couple of sacks, constant pressure on Burrow, and a low-scoring Rams win.

Favorite Bengals long-shot bet: Tee Higgins, WR, +6000 via FanDuel Sportsbook

If Santonio Holmes can win Super Bowl MVP, then Higgins can too. He has 13 catches for 199 yards on 19 targets over the last two games and has established himself as a very big part of this offense in the playoffs. He could be the go-to option in the passing game with the Rams keying in on Ja’Marr Chase.

Above all else, though, I do like this one quite a bit because Higgins was the team’s leader in red-zone targets in the regular season. There’s a high probability he gets in the end zone on Sunday due to that reason, and if Holmes can win the award off of what was essentially one catch in Super Bowl XLII then Higgins can, too. There’s even a chance we get multiple touchdowns.

Favorite Hail Mary Super Bowl MVP Bet: Bengals PK Evan McPherson, +13000 via DraftKings Sportsbook

A kicker has never won Super Bowl MVP, so these odds make perfect sense. If you want to get a little nuts, though, there’s a lot of merit to taking McPherson.

The rookie has quite obviously been the face of the team during the playoffs with a perfect 12-for-12 record on kicks and so many made field goals in the clutch. If he makes three more field goals, he’ll break the playoff record.

If both of these defenses show up like they’re capable of, we’ll see plenty of McPherson. He could be just about the only working part of this team, and if touchdowns are at a premium, then writers could look this way. That’s particularly true if he breaks the record.

Historical Super Bowl MVP Long Shots

It’s very rare to see a long shot win Super Bowl MVP. Dating back to 2004, there have been only six non-quarterbacks to win the award, and the QB position is naturally where you will find the betting favorites.
