San Francisco 49ers vs. Carolina Panthers

The Panthers and 49ers meet up for the second time this season, and much more is on the line this time around.

Carolina closed out the regular season with three straight wins and it was enough to lock up a first round bye. Their bread and butter was a downright dominant defense that ranked second against the run and sixth against the pass.

For San Francisco, they've been playoff mode for the last two months and have risen to the occasion each and every week. They've won seven straight games, which includes road wins over Washington (27-6), Tampa Bay (33-14), Arizona (23-20) and of course Green Bay (23-20) last weekend.

The 49ers are as healthy as they've been all season, with the return of Michael Crabtree acting as a catalyst for San Francisco's improved play. Meanwhile, Aldon Smith has come back from his self-imposed hiatus and picked up right where he left off.

Someone has to win on Sunday and in the end we think it'll be the road team.

So while the Panthers were excellent at home throughout the year, going 7-1 SU and 6-1-1 ATS, the 49ers will be our recommended NFL pick. Jim Harbaugh's crew went 7-2 both straight up and against the spread on the road, so they know what it takes to perform in front of hostile environments.

That much was evident in San Francisco's win at Lambeau Field last weekend. It should be quite the game, but in the end we think the 49ers have the more experienced playoff resume and are therefore the best value.

San Diego Chargers vs. Denver Broncos

To close out the weekend we see Peyton Manning and the Broncos and Philip Rivers and the Chargers going at it for the third time this season.

The season series is tied at one apiece, with the road team taking the win each time. Will that trend hold up again this weekend?

We wouldn't count on it.

But, rather than take the Broncos on the spread, we believe there's better value on the total. We think there will be no shortage of points in this one, as opposed to the battle between Carolina and San Francisco earlier in the day.

There's little chance San Diego will hold Denver to 10 points like they did to Cincinnati last weekend. The Broncos have been an offensive juggernaut all year long and have scored 34+ points in four of their last five regular season games ahead of this playoff battle. With extra time to prepare and get everyone healthy – Wes Welker is listed as probable – Manning and company will be extremely tough to stop.

San Diego's offense has hardly been dormant either. Philip Rivers didn't have to do too much last week, but he'll be counted on to make a lot more plays this time around, and he should be up for the challenge. He's got plenty of weapons surrounding him, so there's no issue there.

The UNDER hit in both regular season meetings, but we just don't see that happening for the third time. These offenses are simply too efficient and love to play at a high tempo, so it's OVER or bust for our NFL picks. Good luck!
