Bettors are seeing the highest over/under (43) of the 2017 NFL preseason as the Saints and Chargers clash at the cozy StubHub Center in Carson, Calif. Sunday night (8 p.m. ET). Don’t let the number scare you away. Playing the total is our Pick of the Day.

New Orleans Saints vs. LA Chargers Betting Odds & Prediction

The Saints enter its Week 2 matchup versus the Chargers on a 10-game preseason losing streak. Win or lose, you can bet New Orleans will put up plenty of points. In 11 seasons leading the Saints, head coach Sean Payton’s squad averages 25.2 points per game in the second contest of the exhibition period. The team has posted less than 24 points twice in this span. Coach likes to see get his offense clicking early.

House Guests

The Chargers hosted New Orleans for two days of joint practices earlier in the week. “Lackadaisical,” is how new running back and former MVP Adrian Peterson described the Saints first workout. Observers noted the team played much better the second day. Peterson proved a standout in each with impressive cuts and productive runs. Whether he touches the field Sunday is a mystery. The 32-year old Petersen last played in an exhibition contest in 2013, telling reporters “I’ll talk with coach when that time comes” in reference to an appearance.

Along with Peterson, quarterback Drew Brees’ status is up in the air, as well as running back Mark Ingram and defensive end Cam Jordan following the joint training. Garrett Grayson and Ryan Nassib should see the most reps under center. The duo combined for 236 yards and a score on 21-of-30 passes in a 20-14 defeat at Cleveland in the opener. Veteran backup quarterback Chase Daniel, who was 6-of-6 with a touchdown in 7-on-7 drills on Friday, will also see action.

Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn suggested the first-team offense and defense could play two or three series. “If they get in one of those long drives like last week, a 13-play one, then they’ll be done,” the rookie coach told reporters. Lynn called out his second- and third-stringers following a 48-17 beatdown by the Seahawks last week, demanding they elevate their game versus the Saints. They’ll get plenty of opportunity for redemption.

Kellen Clemens, Mike Bercovici, and Cardale Jones will see the bulk of action under center for L.A. with starter Philip Rivers expected to sit early. Jones struggled mightily in his Chargers debut, going 3-of-9 with 50 yards passing. Clemens tossed two picks and a score. With Bercovici, the duo combined for 168 yards on 8-of-16 passes. They’ll need a strong performance from a patchwork O-line against New Orleans. Starting left and right tackles Russell Okung and Joe Barksdale missed some practice this week with ailing ankles. Odds are they'll see little playing time.

Leaky Defense

The Chargers defense allowed more yards through the air (325) than any other unit in its Week 1 defeat. The group is adjusting to a new scheme under defensive coordinator Gus Bradley and it’s doubtful the kinks are worked out after a few days of film and practice. A matchup against one of the NFL’s most vertical, high-flying offenses will surrender plenty of points. Given New Orleans’ depth issues and horrid preseason record of late, L.A. will be right in it nonetheless.
