Pittsburgh Steelers are set to kick-off the NFL 2014-2015 season amidst high expectations. Can they deliver on those all the while negotiating a demanding schedule that has them opening with four of six on the road? Find out as we serve up game-by-game predictions and win totals NFL betting picks.

Pittsburgh Steelers aiming for playoffs
For two seasons in a row, the Steelers capped the regular season on an 8-8 mark but without making it into the playoffs. Last year, they got off to a horrendous start, losing their opening four on the trot before a Week 5 Bye. Certainly, they need to get off to a much better start this year if they are to come through on playoff expectations.  Most importantly, they need Ben Roethlisberger to stay healthy and their defense to reclaim its former lofty standard. If they accomplish these two key factors, watch if the Steelers aren’t the sleeper NFL pick on the season. Indeed, odds makers have Steelers chalked at 8.5 on the win totals board, with the Over favoured at betting odds of -135.

Week 1 vs. Cleveland
Last year, the Steelers opened the season on a 16-9 defeat to the Tennessee Titans. Week 1 against Cleveland Browns, therefore, is going to set the tone for the term. The Steelers will look to avoid a similar fate and we feel they just might be able to do so. The Browns have made some key changes, which we are yet to see unfold on the pitch but have made the Browns more competitive on both sides of the ball. They’ll give the Steelers a run for their money, but the Steelers edge the narrow home win.
NFL Pick: Win

Week 2 @ Baltimore
Baltimore Ravens took a step back in their Super Bowl defense campaign last year. Newfound celebrity status, distractions and key losses on the roster all played a part. That was then. Going into the new season, the distance from their Super Bowl glory will be a happy reprieve. This isn’t a side to underestimate, which will make a Steelers road win a tough ask. What’s more, it’s a short week as they descend on Baltimore on a Thursday.
NFL Pick: Loss

Week 3 @ Carolina
Carolina Panthers enter the new season with many question marks hanging over them, particularly over every single position on offense including Cam Newton, who is coming off an ankle injury. If the Panthers solve those issues before this game rolls into town, they’d have a decent edge. Then again, if the Steelers find that formidable trademark defense, they could keep this close, if not pull off the narrow win.
NFL Pick: Win

Week 4 vs. Tampa
The Buccaneers have been revamped from top to bottom, you could say. It’s difficult to gauge what to expect from them this season, which leads us to assume this is a game the Steelers, therefore, should win, particularly when they’ll have home advantage.
NFL Pick: Win

Week 5 @ Jacksonville
Jacksonville Jaguars were one of several beatable teams last year. Several key changes during the offseason, they look good all of a sudden. Good enough to be a .500 team even. Initially, this looked like a straightforward road win for the Steelers. On further thought, it could be closer than one would expect, especially if all the changes made on the Jaguars’ squad come together. Steelers should win, but Jaguars could surprise.
NFL Pick: Loss

Week 6 @ Cleveland
Pittsburgh swept the series against the Browns last season. We feel that this season they’ll split the series by winning at home. As mentioned in the Week 1 synopsis, the Browns are set up to be more competitive this season. If that does actually pan out, we expect they’ll be tough to beat at home.
NFL Pick: Loss

Week 7 vs. Houston
Texans are coming off a forgettable season, prompting an overhaul that suggests they won’t be pushovers this term. That said with the Ryan Fitzpatrick (formerly of the Titans (7-9 last season)) handed the starting QB role, it remains to be seen which way he’ll lead this team. This is Monday Night Football betting on the road. The Steelers should win at home over the Texans.
NFL Pick: Win

Week 8 vs. Indianapolis
Steelers defense will have to be fully cognisant against one of the league’s rising quarterbacks, Andrew Luck. If they’re all present and accounted for, they can beat Indianapolis with home advantage.
NFL Pick: Win

Week 9 vs. Baltimore
Joe Flacco is another quarterback that doesn’t play his best on the road. Last season, the Ravens were 2-6 on the road. If that trend continues (let’s face it, why wouldn’t it?), the Steelers should win handily.
NFL Pick: Win

Week 10 @ Jets
Last season, the Steelers descended on the Jets to clinch the 19-6 victory. The Jets are a side with plenty of upside and are improving steadily over the past few seasons. It’d be wise not to underestimate them. Still, the Steelers could take the win here.
NFL Pick: Win

Week 11 @  Tennessee
Too much is up in the air where the Titans are concerned, namely their “star” quarterback Jake Locker who is coming off a significant injury. Many questions linger. Whether he’ll be even fit enough to make it this deep into the season is uppermost. It’s quite possible that by Week 11, he’ll have limped off the pitch already and a complete unknown is starting. This must be a Steelers win.
NFL Pick: Win

Week 12 - Bye
Steelers take an 8-3 mark into their Bye week, looking to sew up the AFC North playoff spot down the stretch.

Week 13 vs. New Orleans
Drew Brees and the Saints can breeze into town and take the win, make no mistake. Offensively, they’re formidable. If Steelers defense is not up to par, the Saints could run riot.
NFL Pick: Loss

Week 14 @ Cincinnati
The Bengals clinched the AFC North last season with an 11-5 mark but they split the series with the Steelers, each winning at home. Expect much of the same this season between two sides that appear well matched. Seeing as this meeting is in Cincy, expect Bengals to win at home.
NFL Pick: Loss

Week 15 @ Atlanta
Atlanta are coming off a disappointing season. However, many pundits and experts are of the opinion it was an anomaly. Hard to say then what to expect from them this season, but if the Steelers are in the hunt for the AFC North title, they can’t afford to drop many games down the stretch.
NFL Pick: Win

Week 16 vs. Kansas City
With home advantage, the season winding down and (potentially) an AFC North battle for top spot, the Steelers might need the win here. However, Kansas City Chiefs defense could be the difference against the Steelers. We expect this to be a close one that could go either way.
NFL Pick: Loss

Week 17 vs. Cincinnati
As mentioned in Week 14, we believe these divisional rivals will split their home games this season. Cincy won at home. Steelers win at home here, only just.
NFL Pick: Win
