Take the points with the Bengals and Jets for your NFL preseason picks of the day, as Cincinnati host the Chiefs and New York travels to Detroit to take on the Lions.

Chiefs vs. Bengals Odds & Prediction

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid may play his first-team offense through the second quarter on Saturday after touching the field for just one series in a 27-17 loss to the 49ers last week. Expect a bunch of rushing. K.C. was held to a measly 31 yards on the ground on 14 carries in the defeat. The longest gain of the night was a 5-yard gain from C.J. Spiller.

Alex Smith will start at quarterback through the first half, with rookie Patrick Mahomes and Tyler Bray under center for the third and fourth quarters. Observers note this is Smith’s best camp in a Chiefs uniform, spurred on by his mentorship over first-round pick Mahomes. Smith was 4 of 6 for 48 yards in his lone series against the Niners, guiding the team to a touchdown after two big third-down conversions. Mahomes went 7 of 9 for 49 yards and a score.

The first-team defense is on a mission to create turnovers after failing to generate one in the opener. K.C. led the NFL in 2016 with 2.0 takeaways per game.

Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis has been mum on his game plan, but starters should be in for all of the first quarter. At quarterback, Lewis typically plays Andy Dalton for a pair of series in Week 2. Third-stringer Jeff Driskel will likely take the majority of snaps, as he did last week with 35 overall. The second-year pro threw for a score and 97 yards on 8-of-9 passes. Backup AJ McCarron and Dalton took 15 and 13 snaps respectively. Expect a similar workload versus the Chiefs.

Lewis praised his younger personnel after a convincing 23-12 win over the Buccaneers in Week 1. The second- and third-stringers earned more playing time versus the K.C., particularly on defense.

Reid revealed the Chiefs are committed to the run tonight, tipping their hand to Lewis and his squad. The Bengals second-team defense is full of confidence and will look to build on it in its final home game this preseason. The Chiefs have never scored more than 20 points in Week 2 under Reid, which is benchmark typically needed to win exhibition games. This contest will be a battle in the trenches with the Bengals poised to come out on top, despite K.C. owning a veteran presence. Take the points (+2.5) for your NFL picks with Cincy for your best bet.

Jets vs. Lions Odds & Prediction

It’s do-or-die time for Jets quarterback Christian Hackenburg. The second-year pro needs to impress tonight to convince coaches he can challenge Josh McCown’s first-team gig. Hackenburg will get his chance. He is expected to play the second and third quarters—starters on both sides of the ball will not play much beyond the first quarter.

Hackenburg performed well in New York’s 7-3 win over the Titans last week. Limited to mainly short passes, he went 18 of 25 for 127 yards. Hackenburg showed greater maturity in the pocket with improved decision-making and quicker throws. Look for the Jets to open up the playbook with greater shots down the field.

The Lions starting offense is expected to play three possessions after taking four snaps in the team’s 24-10 win over the Colts. The defense essentially pitched a shutout in the victory, the Colts scoring a touchdown on the final play of the game. The unit hopes to boss a New York offense that is just as poor on paper.

The Jets D-line tallied eight sacks last week, and should dominate a Lions front not as stout as the Titans. The unit will keep the game within reach. Can Hackenburg deliver? We think so. Lions head coach Jim Caldwell is just 1-6 SU in Week 2, losing his last five straight.
