The 49ers are coming off of a great season, but a disappointing end after they saw the Seahawks win the Super Bowl. However this offseason they have spent a ton of money, in an effort to finally capture the Lombardi Trophy, and it has affected their NFL Odds.
Super Bowl (+750)
After losing in the NFC Title game last season, the 49ers’ work started right away. They eventually re-signed Colin Kaepernick to a huge extension this offseason, which started and pretty much stopped their offseason spending. However after his signing bonus, Kaepernick isn’t making a whole lot of money yet, as the deal starts in the 2015 season. This has allowed the Niners to get creative with their cap space. They re-signed Aquan Boldin and traded for Stevie Johnson whom will both add a lot alongside Vernon Davis and Michael Crabtree. With all of these weapons in the receiving core, the aerial attack might be heavier; recently, Offensive Coordinator Greg Roman stated to the San Francisco Chronicle that the Niners might throw the ball more this season. When you pay Kaepernick $127 million until the 2020 season, you are going to use more than his legs and game management skills.
With the Niners potentially throwing the ball more this season, they may have enough to take control of this conference. The Seahawks are going to be down some this season, and with a loss of several defensive starters, the Hawks probably won’t win 13 games again this season. To win the NFC however I think the Niners have to beat out the Hawks for the division, and for that to happen they will easily have to win at least another 12 games in 2014. Their defense will have to shoulder a heavy load, but if their offense is as prolific as the coaches are projecting, San Francisco could have the best NFL Odds value of any team in the NFC.
NFC West (+140)
At Bovada, the Niners come in as +140 to win their division, with the Hawks right ahead of them at +130. Other sportsbooks have them as co-favorites to win the NFC West, and there are some that have the Niners as bigger dogs than +140. However the Bovada lines are pretty sharp at where they’re at now, and I would not be opposed to anyone taking the Niners to win the division. The Niners were 30th in the NFL in passing yards last season, which was by design, however if the elevate their passing game from a year ago, this team might be as close to unstoppable as the Broncos in the AFC. Remember that Crabtree was injured virtually the entire season last year, while Boldin and Davis were charged with most of the reception duties. Now adding a healthier Crabtree, bringing Boldin back and bringing in Johnson from the Bills gives the Niners four guys who could all finish in the top 25 or 30 in receiving yards this season if Kaepernick breakout. Things have seemingly been slowly falling in place for the Niners, and I think watching the Seahawks win the Super Bowl might be the final push this team needs.
