The NFL Preseason kicked off last night and for three days at the end of the week, we will get to see the first sign of football. The NFL Odds for the preseason can be very valuable, and I have identified my three favorite plays this week.

49ers vs. Ravens
The NFL likes to set up good drama in the preseason, because they know people are going to watch, and they can get away with setting up games to get good ratings even if they are meaningless. Take the ‘Brother vs. Brother’ preseason matchup that happens this Thursday between the Niners and Ravens. The NFL Odds have this game as an even pick em’, with a total of 35 points. However it seems like the Ravens might be the better bet in this game. The Niners have to travel across country, and even though it’s Week 1 of the preseason, it is still something that needs considering. What also needs considering is the two Harbaugh’s preseason records. At first glance one can’t help but notice that Jim Harbaugh has gone 6-2 SU in the last two preseasons, however in Week 1 of the preseason he is only 1-2 SU. His older brother however is a very good, 5-1 SU in Week 1 of the preseason with the Ravens.

Dolphins vs. Falcons
Even though the Dolphins have to travel for this game, they get to go to the dome in Atlanta to face a Falcons team not known for their preseason dominance. In fact in his career, Mike Smith is only 7-17 SU in the NFL preseason. In the preseason Week 1 NFL Odds, the Dolphins are a +2 ½ underdog, with a total 37. Not only are Smith’s Falcons traditionally bad in the preseason, but also Week 1 of the preseason gives them more trouble than most weeks. In his six preseasons with the Falcons, Smith is only 1-5 SU in Week 1. Combine that with the potential underdog value the Dolphins could create at around +113, the Dolphins don’t look like a bad value. Joe Philbin doesn’t have the greatest preseason record in his time in Miami, however it is a small sample size, and I could see him trying to use this game to get his young quarterback a few more reps.

Patriots vs. Redskins
This is a little tougher gam to handicap because the Redskins are under a new head coach in Jay Gruden. Under Mike Shanahan, the Redskins were a preseason giant. Week 1 of the preseason was especially good, however now we have no history to go on. However first year head coaches didn’t fair well last preseason, especially in Week 1. New head coaches were only about .500 in the exhibition games, and in 2013 were 2-4 SU in Week 1 of the preseason. Bill Belichick’s Patriots are another story. In his long career with the Patriots, Belichick’s teams are 11-4 SU in Week 1 of the preseason. Right now their NFL Odds against the Redskins have them as a slight underdog on the road, and a moneyline price that could be in the +110 range. The moneyline value is too much to overlook in Week 1, especially with the Patriots’ preseason prowess in Week 1.
