While the New York Jets are headed into another early offseason, the New England Patriots are gearing up for another Super Bowl run. Will the defending champ's quest for the top AFC seed spur them enough to cover as huge home favorites Sunday?

Free NFL Pick: Patriots -14.5Best Line Offered: HeritageGame Overview

The 5-10 Jets, who will miss the postseason for the seventh consecutive season, limp into their season finale with just one SU victory in their last six games. New York came up short both SU and ATS in last week's 14-7 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers as a 6.5-point home underdog. The Jets are 8-6-1 ATS on the year, with the total staying under in two of their last three games.

New York lost this season's first meeting to AFC East rival New England, 24-17 as a nine-point home underdog, with Jets QB Josh McCown throwing for 354 yards and two touchdowns. Bryce Petty got the call against the Chargers and completed 15 of 28 passes for 119 yards. The Jets added 197 yards on the ground behind Bilal Powell’s 145 yards rushing on 19 carries for an average of 7.6 yards a run. New York ranks 24th in total yards per game (309.1) and 17th in rushing with a 110.8-yard average.

The Patriots, cruising along in their quest for the top AFC playoff seed, are coming off a 37-16 home victory against Buffalo to easily cover as 10.5-point favorites. They are 12-3 SU and 10-5 ATS. The total went over 47.5 points against the Bills after staying under in four of their previous five games. New England is 4-3 ATS at home.

Do not look for Patriots Head Coach Bill Belichick to rest too many starters. New England will try to keep that winning momentum going into the playoffs following a first-round bye. The offense ranks first in the league in yards (398.5) and third in scoring (28.8 points per game). Defensively, the Patriots are 29th in yards allowed (373.9) but they improve all the way to fifth in points allowed (19.3).

Game Betting Trends

The Jets have failed to cover in four of their last six games and have failed to cover in six of their last eight road games. The total has stayed under in six of their last nine road games.

The Patriots have covered in four of their last five home games to complement an overall 8-1 run ATS in their last nine games. The total has gone over in seven of their last nine home games.

New England’s SU winning streak at home against New York stands at five games, but it falls to 1-3-1 ATS in those contests. The total has gone over in six of the last eight meetings in Foxborough.

The Verdict

New York is playing for pride while also trying to play the role of spoiler, but there is just too wide of a gap between these division foes to keep this game closer than the current spread. New England has been a solid bet ATS since early October, and my NFL pick has me going that way again Sunday.
