Houston Texans head to New York as the 2-point favourites over the Giants. Who’d have thought last season’s NFL dunce would turn the odds in their favour so quickly, just two weeks into the season? Here’s a primer on Week 3 NFL betting odds for the Texans vs. Giants complete with NFL picks.

Houston Texans Race to a 2-0 Start
Houston Texans now have won as many games as they did the entire 2013 season. Texans opened 2013 with a resounding 17-6 victory over Washington Redskins at home and followed with a 30-14 beat down over the Raiders in Oakland, both times coming through as the chalk (2.5 and 3-point, respectively) handily. Texans are 2-0 SU and ATS going into week 3 and many NFL bettors agree they deserve to be the 2-point chalk here on the NFL odds.

Ryan Fitzpatrick has three touchdowns this season. He also has totted up 345 passing yards with an 8.4 average per pass attempt that puts him second behind Andy Dalton who is averaging 9.07 yards per passing attempt. Fitzpatrick also boasts a 68.3 completion percentage and a 118.4 QBR, the latter of which puts him second to only Peyton Manning at 126.5. While Houston are 30th in passing offense with 172.5 yards per game, they are 8th in rushing offense at 151.5.

One of the main aspects of the Houston’s success so far is its resurgent defense. J.J. Watt and crew have been instrumental against opposing offenses and allowing just 20 points over two games, which marks one of the lowest tallies in the league at the moment.

New York Giants Flatter to Deceive
The New York Giants promising finish last season and wholesale changes during the offseason have combined for naught. Well, not yet, if their 0-2 start on the season were any indication. They were woeful in their season opener against Detroit Lions. And abysmal at home to Arizona Cardinals as they went down 25-14 at MetLife Stadium, all while second-string quarterback Drew Stanton filled in at centre for a sidelined Carson Palmer.

Giants are struggling from top to bottom. Offense appears clueless with Eli Manning unable to come to grips with the west coast offense, not to mention his ever-increasing turnovers (pun intended). Defense is slovenly, unfocused and flummoxed by opposing offenses all too easily – one of the most revealing stats: allowing teams to get first downs 43.8 % of the time. Reverting back to Eli Manning, his personal stats are concerning too. Opening week, he boasted a dreadful 54.5 completion percentage and accounted for just 163 passing yards. Week 2 saw some marked improvement, accounting for 277 passing yards, two touchdowns and a 66.7 completion percentage. (Rushing isn’t his thing as he had ZERO in week 1 and just 5 in week 2).

NFL Betting Line:
Houston Texans -130, -2.0 (-110), O/U 41.5
New York Giants +110, +2.0 (-110), O/U 41.5

NFL Betting Verdict
Getting a pulse on the New York Giants can be extremely frustrating from week-to-week in NFL betting. At the moment, they would appear to be comatose. Winless on the season after two weeks must be déjà vu for Giants fans all over again (last season they went 0-6 to start the season). And if that’s not enough to send them into a dark room for quiet reflection, NFL betting confidence has clearly been lost: the Giants host the Houston Texans as the 2-point home pups, despite boasting a 2-1 SU record over the Texans since 2001.

It’s not unusual to have the Giants lay an egg one week only to turnaround and win the next by playing lights out. But the Giants are nesting on a 0-2 start on the season. And if each of those accounts were anything to go by, the prognosis isn’t good admittedly. Last week, we took a chance on the Giants at home against the Cardinals, believing they’d do exactly that: pull a rabbit out of the hat. But they didn’t, obviously.

Do we stick with the Giants again this week, or do we buy what the Houston Texans are selling, put stock into their form, momentum and confidence ahead of this game, not least their excellent rushing offense and a defense, which could make Eli Manning’s head spin in the pocket?

NFL Betting Picks
Backing the Giants this week just feels like backing the wrong horse (to borrow horse racing idioms) on your NFL picks yet again. Texans are headed in the right direction, and although Ryan Fitzpatrick might not belong to the quarterback glitterati, he’s not put a foot wrong yet (Zero interceptions and sacks). Giants, unfortunately, are headed in the wrong direction -- both 0-2 SU and ATS this season with an average margin of defeat at steep 16-points. And Eli Manning’s confidence seems to be waning in proportion to his turnovers. If he continues to drop the ball, it’s hard to imagine how he would best a formidable Texans defense.
