Although we likely won’t see much of the starters for any team this week, there could still be some nice NFL Odds value between some of these teams. This statement could be true for the Patriots and Giants. New York is a -3 home favorite right now, with a total of 42 points.

Super Bowl rematch to feature a rookie starting quarterback
Although Super Bowls 42 and 46 were probably more entertaining that this game will be, this game could have some nice NFL Odds value. The Patriots are in an interesting spot right now, and their quarterback situation after Tom Brady is quickly coming into focus.

After it was confirmed that Sam Bradford of the Rams has a torn ACL again, there was a report that the Patriots are holding out Ryan Mallett for the final week of the preseason, and starting rookie, Jimmy Garoppolo from Eastern Illinois. While I hate speculation, it seems likely that the Patriots and Rams are in talks with one another, however I’m also sure that the Rams are exploring all options when it comes to potentially acquiring a QB. The Pats holding out Mallett could mean nothing in the long term, but for the short term, it means Garoppolo is going to get plenty of playing time this week against the Giants.

Garoppolo has been a very good preseason quarterback so far this year. After being drafted in the 2nd round out of EIU, Garoppolo has just thrown for 24/27 passing, with 334 yards and four touchdowns. He has also yet to throw a pick in the preseason, and after performances like that, it’s hard to bet against the Patriots in this game, especially as +3 underdogs.

The Sharp Pick
On the Giants’ side of things, if Eli Manning doesn’t play, or doesn’t play much, the G-Men will go to a combination of Curtis Painter and Ryan Nassib as their quarterbacks for this week. Nassib looked great against the second and third string defense of the Jets this past week, throwing for three touchdowns. However no one is expecting the Giants to get to pay against backups all season, and other than Nassib’s three touchdown performance last week, there wasn’t much to take away from the Giants’ preseason.

However if Nassib can have another showing this week like he did in Week 3, the Giants may be able to win this game. However much like Garoppolo, Nassib is still learning a new offense in New York.

Since this game will be a battle of the backups, the defense will likely play as much, or more of a role than the young QBs that will ultimately decide the outcome of this game. For the Pats, as long as they can slow down young, Andre Williams, they should come away with the win and/or cover here. Williams has been another small bright spot for the Giants this season, and he should get plenty of looks in this final preseason game. Even though he will likely start the season behind Rashad Jennings, his stock is rising.

However even he won’t be enough to stop the Pats. Between Garoppolo and the Pats’ strong run defense, I am taking the points in this game.
