The San Francisco 49ers and Dallas Cowboys collide in week 1 NFL after preseason accounts that left much to be desired. Here’s a primer on this highly anticipated clash complete with NFL odds and picks for your consideration.

San Francisco 49ers (0-0, 0-0 away)
NFL Game Lines: -220, -4.5 -110 Total 51.0
Betting Analysis: San Francisco 49ers’preseason left many NFL bettors perplexed, despite going 2-2. What’s widely considered to be one of the most lethal offenses in the league only combined for two field goals – one in a 23-3 defeat to Baltimore Ravens and one in a 21-7 victory over the Chargers. In week 2 NFL preseason betting, both starters and backups were unable to produce anything meaningful against the Denver Broncos as they succumbed to a 34-0. In spite of all the questions raised, the Niners enter week 1 of NFL betting as the hot favourites to win straight up at -220 and the 4.5-point favourites on the spread. Goes to show how much is down to perception in NFL betting markets when all is said and done. It remains to be seen whether the Niners offense will pick up from where it left off the last two seasons and whether Kaepernick will deliver on his undeniable potential at centre having taken the Niners to the Super bowl two years ago and the Conference finals last year.

Dallas Cowboys (0-0, 0-0 home)
NFL Game Lines: +190, +4.5 -110 Total 51.0
Betting Analysis: The Dallas Cowboys look to put to bed a winless preseason that raised more questions than answers with a solid home win at the expense of the San Francisco 49ers. The regular season is when it counts and the Cowboys have several things going for them a) Romo showed he can absorb hits (sacked three times in preseason), which is encouraging in itself as it is concerning; b) the Cowboys are heading into week 1 with 6-4 SU record in their last ten home games; and c) they have four wins in their last five meetings with the Niners.

Unfortunately, bookies remain unconvinced. Sending the Cowboys into week 1 NFL betting as the home underdogs at +180 to win straight up, marking only the second game of the first week of the season to feature a home underdog – Miami Dolphins are the other home underdogs on the boards when they host the New England Patriots.

Cowboys offense depends on Tony Romo’s health this season. The 34-year-old veteran quarterback is coming off major back surgery, prompting legitimate concerns about his ability to sustain the weekly grind of an NFL season. How he holds up will largely determine what the Cowboys season will amount to – last season, he led them to a fifth place finish in the rankings with an average of 27.4 points per game. Defense is where the Cowboys were found most wanting, finishing 30th against the pass and 27th against the rush. Thus, total defense saw them propping up the league with 415 yards allowed and 27 points per game. Unfortunately for Cowboys fans, those d-issues look to be getting worse through free agency and injury losses.

NFL Betting Verdict: This is one of those games that’s a complete tossup. Both sides’s starters had poor showings in the preseason and it’s yet uncertain whether those issues will factor when it counts. On paper, the Niners do look to be the better side. Therefore, NFL odds are correct listing them as favourites at -230 to win straight up. But the Cowboys have a way of playing up to the opposition particularly at the AT & T Stadium where they are 6-4 SU in their last ten games. So it might be hasty to write them off just yet.
