Patriots Sign Cam Newton to One-Year Deal

Cam Newton is no longer a free agent! The New England Patriots just signed the former NFL MVP to replace Tom Brady!

According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the Patriots and Cam Newton quietly worked on this deal recently and he’s coming over on a one-year contract worth up to $7.5 million.

Why Did the Panthers Let Him Go?

The Panthers decided to move on from Cam Newton after nine seasons. Newton, clearly the best player in franchise history, was given permission to seek a trade on March 17th. One week later he couldn’t find a new team and the Panthers decided to release him.

Former Vikings and Saints quarterback Teddy Bridgewater will replace him in Carolina after agreeing to a three-year 63 million deal with $30 million guaranteed.

The Panthers couldn’t find a suitor for Cam Newton because of his health. They lost 20-14 against the Buccaneers on September 12th and in that game, Newton re-aggravated the foot injury he first suffered during an August 22nd preseason contest against the Patriots. That night Newton left near the end of the first quarter and was seen limping to the locker room.

Newton has dealt with many injuries over the last few seasons. He underwent an “arthroscopic procedure” on his right shoulder in January after having another one on a torn rotator cuff in the same shoulder in March 2017.

The 30-year-old threw for over 3,000 yards in each of his first eight seasons in the NFL (all with the Panthers). He missed the final two games of the 2018 season and still threw for 3,395 yards (completing 67.9 percent of his passes) with 24 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.

Cam Newton’s Stats Last Season

Newton really struggled last season. He completed just 50 of 89 passes for 572 yards and one interception and the Panthers opened the season 0-2 after home losses against the Rams and Buccaneers.

The signal-caller hasn’t thrown a touchdown in his last four games. His last touchdown pass was in a 24-17 loss at Tampa Bay on December 2nd, 2018. The Panthers lost Newton’s last eight games as their starting quarterback dating back to the 2018 season.

I just couldn’t understand why Jameis Winston, Andy Dalton and Joe Flacco all had new jobs and Newton was still available this late. Teams should not have given up on him. Newton still has great potential. It seemed that people forgot that he won an MVP award after leading the Panthers to a 15-1 record and a Super Bowl appearance in 2015. Cam Newton has been one of the most electrifying players in the league since 2011.

While he may not be the runner he once was, he is still an athletic quarterback and he will be 31 years old by the time the new season starts. BetOnline listed the Patriots as +400 favorites for Newton’s next destination. I predicted this move for Cam Newton almost two weeks ago: “The Patriots should give Newton a team-friendly one year contract to prove his worth. I will invest in this for my NFL picks.”

Newton Recently Worked Out With OBJ

Cam Newton shared a video of himself and Odell Beckham Jr. putting in work on his Instagram.

Both players have been hard at work in the offseason, though this was their first session together.

There hadn’t been much movement on the free agent market as of late but Ron Rivera, Newton’s former head coach in Carolina, had confidence in him:

“The one thing about Cam Newton with an edge for something to prove, don’t ever bet against him,” Rivera told FS1’s Jay Glazer. “From the people that are around him that I know, they’ve all said the same thing to me. They’ve said, ‘Coach, he looks great. He really does. They also told me, ‘He’s a little bit different.’ His whole attitude — he’s got something to prove.”

How Newton Helps the Patriots

The Patriots and six-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady decided to go their separate ways. New England was supposed to rely on Jarrett Stidham as the starting quarterback but Cam Newton is an upgrade.

Newton is an athletic and dynamic quarterback. He can jump-start the New England offense. Their receiving corps is bad but Newton spent years with Brandon LaFell, Ted Ginn Jr. and Devin Funchess as his main targets. This tells us that he can make the most of what he has to work with.

Can Jarrett Stidham be the long-term answer for the Patriots? No one knows as we haven’t really seen what he is capable of. The Patriots also brought back Brian Hoyer for a third time, just in case Stidham struggled. Cam Newton is much better than Hoyer as well.
