Online bookies split, as NFL odds makers get to work as Matt Cassel named Titans starter.

Matt Cassel to Get the Start

News recently broke that the Tennessee Titans will look to start former Pro-Bowl Quarterback Matt Cassel in place of Marcus Mariota, who strained his hamstring in last week’s loss to the Texans.

NFL odds makes re scrambling to quickly adjust the lines to reflect the news, and after the Titans had opened as 3 point road favourites over Jay Cutler and the 1-2 Miami Dolphins, the Line has fallen to Tenn -1 point or even down to Miami -1 at most of the web’s top betting sites

Cassel filled in for Mariota last week after the Titan’s starter exited the game, and the raging Cassel turned over the ball three times in the second half alone. These turnovers proved costly, two were interceptions, one returned for a touchdown, and he also dropped the ball while being sacked deep in Tennessee territory, giving the Texans great field position.

While the Dolphins’ D does not compare to the front he faced in Houston, the Titans’ front line is going to have to protect Matt if they hope to have a shot at winning.

Betting the Game

The game's total has also fallen slightly, as it now rests at 42 points, as many expect this to be a battle of two teams who simply want to hold onto the ball.

Sure Cassel has been turnover prone, but a smart plan of attack should allow him to make the plays necessary to put this game in the ‘W’ column for the Titans.

Dolphins Will Look to Contain Titans’ Ground Game

Miami will likely force the Titans to look to the air, as Miami will load the box in hopes o containing DeMarco Murray and Derrick Henry. The only way that the Titans can open up the running game is by forcing the defense to also protect against a variety of passing options. Expect short, quick throws to the RBs and tight ends, and occasional down the field looks to Taiwan Taylor and Rishard Matthews.

Only by stretching out the Dolphins’ defense will the Titans be able to allow themselves a chance of running the ball successfully. Passing props for Cassel might be worth a loon in this situation, as his turnover rate in recent outings might force bookies to keep the line lower than expected.

Cassel vs. Cutler?

Just looking at this QB matchup does make it feel like we went back in time somehow, as both men have spent years in the league, yet tend to find themselves in the same ‘just retire already’ category.

Cassel, an NFL journeyman, has mostly filled in for injured starters recent years, leading the Cowboys for much of the 2015 season after Tony Romo went out with his regular shoulder/collarbone injury. He also filled in for Mariota once last season, entering the Christmas Eve game against the Jaguars. The Titans went on to win that game, as Cassel tossed one touchdown and an interception.

Cutler seemed to be out of the game after the former Bear claimed to retire with hopes of trading shoulder pads for a broadcasting mic. An injury Ryan Tannehill forced the Dolphins to settle for his… umm… talents until Ryan makes a healthy return.
