Denver’s D ruled the day once again as the Broncos shut out the Bears while the 49’ers stumbled in Week 1 of the preseason. Let’s analyze this Week 2 matchup and get your NFL pick.

Swinger’s Preseason Record 2-0-1 (+2.0 units)
We started off the preseason with two of three cashes in our selections last week as the Vikings defeated the Bengals as a small road dog and over 36 ½ in the Redskins/Falcons game clicked as well. The Rams (-4) rallied to win 28-24 and give us a merciful push in their tilt with Dallas. Don’t forget to check out my other preseason NFL picks right here. Let’s review the NFL odds in this battle at Mile High and keep on cashing.

Orange Crush Dominates
While this Denver defense may not officially be called the Orange Crush, as that distinction belongs to their predecessors of the mid-70’s and early 80’s, this edition is every bit as ferocious and tenacious as the Lyle Alzado led terrors who wreaked havoc on the gridiron four decades ago. It was largely responsible for their success during the 2015 regular season campaign and culminated in a Super Bowl shutdown of the Carolina Panthers’ juggernaut.

After Week 1 of the preseason, you could say nothing has changed. The Broncos stifled the Bears on the ground and through the air, limiting Chicago to just 48 yards rushing and 82 yards passing. The Broncos swarmed the Bears’ backfield and notched seven sacks on the day and forced Chicago to punt nine times during the game. In addition, the Denver defense blocked a punt in the end zone for a touchdown and garnered a safety to boot. In short, the new-look Orange Crush flat out dominated.

49’ers Stumble in Second Half
San Francisco broke out on top of Houston in their preseason opener with a 43-yard strike by Blaine Gabbert (in place of the ailing Colin Kaepernick) and a pair of field goals by Phil Dawson to take a 13-7 lead at the half. The Niners defense actually held the Texans scoreless, as Houston’s TD was the result of a 41-yard fumble return. All in all, the Niners looked sharp but when the second half came, it was all Houston

Though veteran Blaine Gabbert didn’t set the world on fire as he went 4-of-10 for 63 yards, his TD pass to Vance McDonald gave Niners’ fans hope that he has the tools to keep the offense competitive until Kaepernick returns from his sore shoulder. The team did suffer a blow when Thad Lewis, competing for the backup spot with Gabbert, suffered a season-ending ACL tear which necessitated plucking former Vikings’ starter Christian Ponder from the unemployment line and into a 49’ers jersey.

Betting Analysis
The squares will be salivating over the Broncos as home chalk in this matchup because that what squares do. Why in the world would anyone bet the lowly Niners against a world class defense like the Broncos in their own sandbox? It doesn’t make much sense which is only one reason why the public is usually, though not always, wrong.

The 49’ers are the play here as the Broncos lost defensive end Vance Walker for the season last week and the status of All-World linebacker Von Miller is still questionable as he sat out for personal reasons in the preseason opener. In addition, DeMarcus Ware (back) and Aqib Talib (gunshot wound…yes, you can’t make this up) will both be either shelved or will see very limited action in Week 2 against the 49’ers.

Of course, their absences didn’t hinder Denver one bit last week against the anemic Bears but the 49’ers now toil under the guardianship of Chip Kelly. I foresee plenty of second and third-stringers getting plenty of time against San Francisco’s first-string as the Niners need a motivational boost here. Yes, it is only a meaningless preseason game but Kelly understands his team needs a win and getting it against the world champs could be the cure that solves his problems – at least in the short term.
