That one of these two teams is in first place in the NFC South and one in last isn’t a huge surprise. It’s just I expected the clubs to be flip-flopped. Survivor Pick: New Orleans.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers at New Orleans Saints (-7, 50)

A few prominent experts that you surely have heard of predicted that Tampa Bay’s Jameis Winston would win an MVP Award this season back in the summer. But he has not taken a leap into superstar status. Winston has thrown for plenty of yards (1,853) but he still makes too many boneheaded decisions as noted by his six interceptions and seven fumbles. The Bucs have dropped four straight to fall into the NFC South cellar. In Sunday’s 17-3 home defeat to Carolina, Winston was picked off twice and lost a fumble when he should have just swallowed the ball and gone down. He has been playing through a shoulder injury, but everyone in the NFL is hurting at this point of the season. New Orleans looked so terrible the first two weeks but has won five straight thanks not so much to Drew Brees but a resurgent running game (Mark Ingram and Alvin Kamara) and defense. These teams split last year, each winning at home.

  • Buccaneers are 0-3-1 ATS in their last 4 road games.
  • Saints are 8-1 ATS vs. a team with a losing record.

The 3 points scored on Sunday were Tampa’s fewest since 2014. Winston was still at Florida State then. On 11 third-down throws Sunday, Winston completed as many passes to the Panthers as he did to his teammates (two), and only one of the latter two went for a first down. Winston also threw incomplete on his only fourth-down attempt. The Tampa defense has also been a disappointment this year too but played well in the loss to the Panthers, holding Carolina to 254 total yards. New Orleans avoided a trap in beating visiting Chicago 20-12 on Sunday despite Brees not throwing for a touchdown. It used to be unheard of for the Saints to win a game where Brees didn’t have a TD. Defensively, Marshon Lattimore deserves some NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year votes. Last week, Pro Football Focus said Lattimore was the highest-graded rookie at any position it had scouted through seven games. He had a pick against the Bears to clinch it. Fellow cornerback Delvin Breaux is eligible to be activated from injured reserve this week after breaking his fibula in the preseason but will be brought along slowly.

  • Over is 4-0 in Buccaneers last 4 road games.
  • Over is 12-4-1 in Saints last 17 home games.
