Our NFL handicapper spots a phenomenon that is rare among West coast teams, with the Raiders bucking a major trend. Add in the fact that this capper is a major fan of one of the teams below, and you have an easy Week 8 NFL Pick.

2016 NFL Record: 6-10-1, -4.95 UnitsOakland Raiders vs Tampa Bay Buccaneers

There is something going on with the Oakland Raiders this year, and growing up as a Seattle Seahawks fan, I’m jealous of it. You see, the Oakland Raiders as a West Coast team have won 4 road 10 AM PST games in a row. This is basically unprecedented in my world, as none of us on the West coast are supposed to be up and ready to go at that time of the day. Nonetheless, the Raiders have hung in there and beat 4 teams already in this situation. So, what is going on?

I think the early season success for the Raiders on the road this year has all to do with head coach, Jack Del Rio. Wins against the New Orleans Saints, Tennessee Titans, Baltimore Ravens, and Jacksonville Jaguars are all like wins against former teams for Del Rio. Del Rio was an assistant coach for the Saints, took the Baltimore Ravens to a Super Bowl title as a linebacker coach, and was the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2003 to 2011. In his last three matchups as a head coach with Jacksonville, including the preseason, Del Rio has won against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as well. Del Rio definitely has his players ready to play at an earlier time of day on the road, and it probably helps that they are away from the dump that is O.Co Stadium.

With the Raiders being 5-2 already this season and a game up in the AFC West, a win this week puts them in serious position to grab a playoff spot. At the least they would be ‘bowl eligible’. 5 of their next games 8 would be at home, and splitting the next 8 would give them a great shot to make the playoffs at 10-6.

On the other hand, the Buccaneers have had only two games at home this year and have lost them both, but admittedly to some of the toughest front seven’s in the NFL of the L.A. Rams and Denver Broncos. Their other loss, on the road, was to the Arizona Cardinals – another team with a great front seven themselves. The Raider rank near the bottom of all standings in passing defense this year, allowing 302.1 yards per game passing and only racking up 9 sacks through seven games.

The NFL odds in this game have opened with the Buccaneers as slight 1 point favorites at home. At 3-3 on the season and going up against a 5-2 team, this is understandable. But I think the trend of the Raiders over performing in 10AM PST starts can’t be overlooked. The Buccaneers are a flawed team, so take the hot hand here and back the Raiders at +1.5 at BetOnline, now offering 50% free play, as one of your Week 8 NFL Picks.
