The Eagles are likely to be a popular Survivor pick this week as they look like the NFL’s best team and the 49ers are the NFC's only winless one. Survivor Pick: Philadelphia.

San Francisco 49ers at Philadelphia Eagles (+13, 47.5)

This is easily the biggest spread on the board for Week 8, and it makes all the sense in the world. The Eagles have the NFL’s best record at 6-1 and the MVP betting favorite in Carson Wentz, who has taken a mega-leap in Year 2. He had two incredible highlight-reel plays in Monday’s win over the NFC East rival Redskins. Meanwhile, the 49ers are the NFC’s only winless team – I won’t do them the disservice of being compared to the AFC winless Browns, because at least the San Francisco players look like they are trying. And the 49ers actually have a good coach in Kyle Shanahan. I am going to take the Niners here for a few reasons. First, the fact that the Eagles are on a short week and off playing a blood rival. This could easily be a letdown game. Second, the Eagles lost two very important players to season-ending injuries in the win over Washington in offensive tackle Jason Peters and linebacker Jordan Hicks. Third, the Niners have been extremely competitive in every game but two – yes, they were crushed at home last week by Dallas. Fourth, I almost always will take it when an NFL team gets more than 10 points. I’d hold off, though, as this could easily rise to 14 or higher by kickoff.

  • 49ers are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 road games.
  • Eagles are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 home games vs. a team with a losing road record.

Led by Wentz, that Philly offense ranks fifth in the NFL in scoring (28.4 ppg) and third in total yards. Wentz completed 17 of 25 passes for 268 yards with four touchdowns against the Redskins and the Eagles rang up 34 points on a defense that’s better than San Francisco’s. Wentz became the second player in franchise history with at least three passing touchdowns in three straight games. The other was Bobby Thomason in 1953. The 49ers are not a good defensive team even at full strength – they rank 29th in yards allowed and surrender 26.6 points per game – and they are really banged up on that side of the ball, especially up front. The Niners should have good-looking rookie linebacker Reuben Foster, however, after leaving last week’s 40-10 loss to the Cowboys late in the third quarter with a rib injury. San Francisco likely allows 30 points here but should score 20.

  • Over is 4-1 in 49ers last 5 games overall.
  • Over is 5-1 in Eagles last 6 games overall.
