History will be made on Sunday night as the Steelers and Lions, two flagship franchises in the NFL, meet in prime time for the first time. Survivor Pick: Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh Steelers at Detroit Lions (+3, 45.5)

There are two games I’m very torn on in Week 8: Raiders at Bills and this one. Why do I like Detroit? Yes, they are on a two-game losing streak, but they come off their bye week. Plus, and you might think this means nothing, now the players know that Aaron Rodgers is likely out for the season. That absolutely can serve as motivation considering this franchise hasn’t won a division title since the early 1990s. Why do I like Pittsburgh? The Steelers are obviously the better team and have the best all-around running back in the NFL in Le’Veon Bell, who is on a major roll. And maybe the NFL’s top receiver in Antonio Brown. The Lions have no one like Bell or Brown. But why don’t I like the Steelers? The whole Martavis Bryant saga. The two-time drug cheat has demanded a trade and now has been suspended for this game. On Sunday, Bryant basically said on Instagram that he’s miles better than rookie teammate JuJu Smith-Schuster, who has stolen much of Bryant’s playing time. After 15 touchdowns in his first two seasons, Bryant has one score on 36 targets, third on the team. What team would trade for him considering his drug suspension past? He missed all of 2016 because of it. But that could be a major distraction. I haven’t found a spread of 3.5 yet, but that’s what I’ll be buying up to or waiting for and taking Detroit.

  • Steelers are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games following a ATS win.
  • Lions are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games following a bye week.

Bell is making an MVP push and he’s also making a ton of money as a potential free agent after this season – unless the Steelers slap the franchise tag on him again. Bell has at least 190 scrimmage yards in each of the past two weeks and leads the NFL with three games with at least 185 scrimmage yards this season. No other player has two games. Lions coach Jim Caldwell said he could not think of a player who has a running style like Le'Veon Bell. Called him both "unique" and "very special." Pittsburgh’s defense has been quite good for the most part, allowing 14 points or fewer in four of the team’s five wins. Detroit gave up 52 points last time out against the Saints, but that was misleading because the Saints scored three times on defense. The Detroit defense has produced the fourth-most expected points per game this season and ranks No. 8 against the run.  The Lions likely won’t have their top receiver in this one, Golden Tate. He’s dealing with a shoulder injury.

  • Under is 20-6 in Steelers last 26 road games.
  • Under is 4-1 in Lions last 5 games after allowing more than 30 points in their previous game.
