The week’s only matchup of sure-fire Hall of Fame quarterbacks is between the Chargers’ Philip Rivers (yes, he will be in Canton) and Patriots’ Tom Brady. Survivor Pick: New England.

Los Angeles Chargers at New England Patriots (-7, 48)

New England has won three straight and six of the past seven against the Chargers, but the teams haven’t met since Week 14 of the 2014 in San Diego, a 23-14 Patriots win. Tom Brady threw a 69-yard touchdown pass to Julian Edelman midway through the fourth quarter for the clinching score. Brady threw for 317 yards, while Philip Rivers was held to 189 yards with a touchdown and a pick. I worry about this being a bit of a letdown game for New England and if this line rises to 7.5, I think I’d take the Chargers. After all, Sunday night’s dominating win over Atlanta in the Super Bowl rematch had to be somewhat emotional for the New England players. The Bolts started 0-4 but could get to .500 with an upset here. They played their best all-around game of the season in Week 7, a 21-0 win in Denver. L.A. had just 242 yards of offense but played great defense. The victory also was win No. 100 for Rivers, who finished 15-of-26 passing for 183 yards and two touchdowns. The Bolts have lost left guard Matt Slauson to a torn biceps injury that will require surgery, ending his season. It’s one of those tough 1 p.m. ET starts for a West Coast team.

  • Chargers are 1-5 ATS vs. a team with a winning record.
  • Patriots are 6-1 ATS vs. a team with a losing record.

So is the Patriots defense fixed? That group entered Week 7 ranked last in total yards allowed and in passing yards, having set an NFL record but allowing six straight quarterbacks to throw for at least 300 yards. I can’t believe the Falcons scored only seven points. Shoot, New England was without two of its top cornerbacks in Stephon Gilmore (concussion) and Eric Rowe (groin). Gilmore missed his second straight game and Rowe his third. I think that result was more of the Falcons really struggling on offense this year. The fog probably helped. Meanwhile, you have to give credit to any defense that pitches a shutout, but the Broncos stink offensively. The last time the Chargers had posted a shutout was in October 2014, a 31-0 victory over the New York Jets in Week 5. I think the Bolts will find it a bit tougher going against Brady than they did vs. Trevor Siemian.

  • Over is 7-3 in Chargers last 10 games in October.
  • Over is 7-0 in Patriots last 7 games following a straight up win of more than 14 points.
