A big showdown in the AFC West kicks off NFL betting action in Week 7 with the Kansas City Chiefs going on the road to face the Oakland Raiders on Thursday Night Football. Both teams are coming off a tough loss heading into this 8:25 p.m. start on CBS from Oakland Coliseum.

Kansas City Chiefs at Oakland Raiders

The Chiefs’ perfect run through the first five weeks of the season both straight-up and against the spread came to a sudden end last Sunday in a 19-13 loss to Pittsburgh as 3.5-point home favorites. It was just the second time this season that the total stayed UNDER the closing NFL betting line and it was the first time that Kansas City failed to score at least 24 points as part of its 29.5-point scoring average that is ranked second in the NFL.

The big test on Thursday night will be how quickly the Chiefs can put last week’s dismal performance against the Steelers in the rearview mirror. Alex Smith was completing well over 70 percent of his throws before dropping to 55.9 percent in Sunday’s loss. Kansas City is one of the top rushing teams in the league behind rookie running back Kareem Hunt, but he was held to just 21 yards on nine carries in that loss.

Oakland’s fast 2-0 start out of the gate both SU and ATS has faded into a 2-4 record both ways with last week’s 17-16 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers as a three-point home favorite. After posting a combined 71 points in those early wins against Tennessee on the road and the New York Jets at home, this offense has sputtered to an average of just 13.3 points during this four-game slide. The total has stayed UNDER in three of those four losses.

To turn things around on Thursday night, the Raiders are going to need Derek Carr to return to form. He has already missed time with a back injury and the rust was evident against the Chargers with 171 yards passing and one score against two interceptions. On the year, Oakland is ranked 30th in the league in average yards gained (278.3) and its defense is 23rd in yards allowed (349.8)

Game Betting Trends

--The Chiefs bring a 6-0 record ATS in their last six division games into Thursday night contest and they have gone 14-3 ATS in their last 17 games on the road. The total has gone OVER in five of their last six road games.

--The Raiders have covered in five of their last seven home games, but they are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 Thursday games. The total has gone OVER in six of their last eight games played in the month of October.

--The road team in this AFC West clash has gone 21-7 ATS in the last 28 meetings and the total has stayed UNDER in 18 of the last 24 games played between the two.

Final Analysis

Kansas City did not bear much resemblance to the team that started the season with five wins in a row last Sunday against Pittsburgh, but I have a good feeling that head coach Andy Reid is going to have his team ready to go on a short week. Oakland’s problems run much deeper right now and I would not expect a dramatic improvement against the best team in the AFC. Lay the 2.5 points on SBR Odds latest betting lines and make the top NFL pick in this one Kansas City SU and ATS.
