Despite coming off a loss, Carolina leads the NFC South at 4-2, while Chicago is, as expected, last in the NFC North with a 2-4 record but enters on a high note. Survivor Pick: Carolina.

Carolina Panthers at Chicago Bears (+3, 40.5)

The Panthers lead the South despite a 1-2 home record but are 3-0 on the road. They are on extra rest after losing 28-23 to the Eagles last Thursday. Cam Newton came crashing back to earth after throwing for at least 300 yards and three TDs in back-to-back games for the first time in his career. He was 28-for-52 for 239 yards, one TD and three picks. He rushed 11 times for 71 yards and a score. The Panthers had third-and-1 at around midfield with 1:26 left but couldn’t get a stinking yard. They didn’t even try to run the ball, which makes zero sense when you have perhaps the best running QB in the NFL. Chicago was a surprise winner at Baltimore on Sunday, 27-24 in OT, the first NFL victory for rookie No. 2 overall pick and quarterback Mitchell Trubisky. His stats weren’t great in completing 8-for-16 for 113 yards but had a nice TD throw and no turnovers. That’s all the Bears are asking of him right now. Carolina is 4-5 all-time vs. Chicago but won the last meeting 31-24 in October 2014.

  • Panthers are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games following a ATS loss.
  • Bears are 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games following a straight up win.

Trubisky might have to do more numbers-wise to pull off this upset because I’m not sure the Bears will run on Carolina’s No. 5 rush defense. Against the Ravens, Chicago had 54 carries for 231 yards. Old-school football! Jordan Howard gained 113 of his career-high 167 rushing yards after initial contact, the most by any player in a game this season and the most by a Bears RB since 2009. The Bears also got a touchdown pass from running back Tarik Cohen on a trick play. Will the Panthers have Pro Bowl linebacker and tackling machine Luke Kuechly? He was put in the concussion protocol after Thursday’s loss to the Eagles. The extra few days between games improves his chances of playing. The Panthers are 16-7 the past two seasons when Kuechly has started. They are 5-4 in the nine games he has missed. Opponents are averaging 24.2 points when Kuechly is out, 21.4 when he plays. Offensively, the Cats are struggling to run. They have just 108 yards rushing in the past two games. Both teams will want to run here and eat clock. That should keep the scoring down.

  • Under is 8-3-1 in Panthers last 12 games on grass.
  • Under is 7-3 in Bears last 10 home games.
