The Cardinals have won the past two meetings over the Bucs, but these franchises appear headed in opposite directions entering Sunday’s matchup in the desert. Survivor Pick: Tampa Bay.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Arizona Cardinals (+2.5, 44)

It’s not too often you see a big-name player traded in the NFL, much less during the season. I guess Adrian Peterson is a big name because he’s one of the best running backs of his generation and a likely Hall of Famer. However, Peterson looked shot last year with Minnesota and early this season with New Orleans, so I’m not confident he will have much effect on a terrible Cardinals running game that badly misses the injured David Johnson. Arizona has rushed 100 times this season and gained 259 yards -- an average of 2.59 yard per carry. The Cardinals ran for 31 yards in a Week 5 blowout loss in Philly. The Tampa Bay offense did next to nothing for three quarters last Thursday vs. New England and woke up a bit too late as Jameis Winston couldn’t quite lead a comeback in a 19-14 loss. He finished with 334 yards passing and a TD but most of that was in the fourth. Arizona beat visiting Tampa 40-7 last year as Carson Palmer threw for 308 yards and three scores. Winston was picked off four times. Palmer hasn’t been particularly good this year, however, with six TDs and five picks. Plus, Tampa is on extra rest.

  • Buccaneers are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 road games.
  • Cardinals are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 home games.

Arizona’s main problem is the offensive line. That unit has allowed the most sacks (13), most hits (21), most hurries (68) and most pressures (102) in the league this season. On average, NFL lines have allowed 53 pressures in 2017. Peterson has just 81 rushing yards on the season, but I guess it’s worth a risk for a conditional late-round draft pick. Johnson’s primary replacements, Kerwynn Williams and Chris Johnson, combined to average just 2.3 yards per carry. You hate to use the word lock in sports, but it was a lock this week that the Bucs were going to replace struggling kicker Nick Folk, who had missed five field goals and an extra point in the past two weeks. They signed Patrick Murray. He was with Tampa as a rookie in 2014 and went 20-of-24 that year (83.3 percent). It included making 6-of-7 field goals from 40 yards or more and 5-of-6 from 50 yards or more. Murray has appeared only two games since due to knee problems, both with Cleveland last year. The Bucs remain banged up on defense.

  • Over is 9-4 in Buccaneers last 13 games following a straight up loss.
  • Over is 7-3 in Cardinals last 10 vs. NFC.
