It’s a matchup of former No. 1 overall picks on Sunday as Cam Newton leads his 3-1 Carolina Panthers into Detroit against the 3-1 Lions. Survivor Pick: Detroit.

Carolina Panthers at Detroit Lions (-3, 44)

This is one of the marquee matchups of Week 5 as the Panthers are tied atop the NFC South and the Lions are the same in the NFC North. So, the winner here could have a potentially huge playoff tiebreaker for home-field advantage. Both clubs looked playoff-worthy in Week 4. The Panthers had the upset of the week, winning 33-30 at New England an Graham Gano’s 48-yard field goal as time expired. Cam Newton had by far his best game of the season in throwing for 316 yards and three touchdowns while running for another. He’s the first QB with 50 rushing touchdowns in his career. The Lions won with defense this past Sunday, 14-7 in Minnesota. Detroit held the Vikings to 284 yards and forced three turnovers. Matthew Stafford was held to 209 yards without a TD but wasn’t picked off. He was sacked six times.

  • Panthers are 2-8-1 ATS in their last 11 games after allowing more than 350 total yards in their previous game.
  • Lions are 4-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings.

So which Newton will we get here? The guy who torched New England’s NFL-worst defense or the one who looked very shaky and not quite 100 percent off shoulder surgery the first three weeks? Detroit’s defense looks much-improved, but it’s hard to take too much from that Vikings win as they were quarterbacked by journeyman Case Keenum and lost rookie star running back Dalvin Cook to a season-ending injury in the game. Detroit forced just 14 turnovers last season, which was 28th in the league. In 2017, the Lions already have forced 11 takeaways and lead the NFL in turnover differential at plus-9.

  • Under is 6-2 in Panthers last 8 games after allowing more than 30 points in their previous game.
  • Under is 10-4 in Lions last 14 games overall.
