Break for the 49ers here as they are on extra rest after playing last Thursday, while the Cardinals are on a short week after facing Dallas on Monday night. Survivor Pick: Arizona.

San Francisco 49ers at Arizona Cardinals (-7, 44.5)

The 49ers are one of five winless teams entering Week 4, but they have shown some improvement under first-year coach Kyle Shanahan. There was a close loss in Seattle in Week 2 and then a thrilling 41-39 home defeat to the Rams on Thursday night in Week 3. Brian Hoyer had struggled the first two weeks but had 332 yards passing and two touchdowns in the loss to L.A. His rating of 98.0 would have been in triple digits if not for five dropped passes. Carlos Hyde added two scores and 84 yards rushing and Pierre Garcon even catches for 142 yards. The team just doesn’t know how to win yet. Arizona dominated the first half of Monday’s game vs. Dallas but it was tied at 7-7 into the break, and the Cowboys pulled away in the second half for a 28-17 win. Carson Palmer looked sharp with 325 yards and two scores, while ageless Larry Fitzgerald had 13 grabs for 149 yards and a touchdown.

  • 49ers are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games in October.
  • Cardinals are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games following a double-digit loss at home.

The Niners are expected to be without two defensive starters here in rookie inside linebacker Reuben Foster, a late first-round pick, and safety Eric Reed. Foster has missed the past two with a sprained right ankle, while Reid missed the Rams game with a knee injury. The Cards are hoping to get starting offensive lineman D.J. Humphries and Mike Iupati back after they sat Monday. Chris Johnson will remain the Cardinals' starting running back for Week 4 even though he was ineffective against the Cowboys and was outplayed by Andre Ellington. Arizona swept San Francisco last year. It was 23-20 at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Week 10. Chandler Catanzaro kicked a 34-yard field goal as time expired, one of the few things Catanzaro did right last year. He’s no longer with the Cardinals. Colin Kaepernick was San Francisco’s QB that game.

  • Under is 4-1 in 49ers last 5 vs. a team with a losing record.
  • Under is 11-2 in Cardinals last 13 home games.
