Two seasons ago, the Carolina Panthers and New England Patriots nearly met in Super Bowl 50. The Cats got there, but the Patriots came up just short in Denver in the AFC title game. Survivor Pick: New England.

Carolina Panthers at New England Patriots (-9, 48.5)

It’s the only matchup of Week 4 featuring former NFL MVPs on both sides in Carolina’s Cam Newton, who was the MVP in that 2015 Super Bowl season, and two-time winner Tom Brady. Newton hasn’t looked the same since ’15 and was awful last week in a 34-13 home loss to New Orleans in completing 17 of 26 for 167 yards, no TDs and three picks. Newton did score Carolina's lone touchdown with a three-yard run during the third quarter. Brady, meanwhile, put on an MVP-caliber show in New England’s comeback win over Houston. He threw five TD passes, the last a 25-yarder to Brandin Cooks with 23 seconds left in the 36-33 win. New England was that close to losing back-to-back home games for the first time in seemingly forever.

  • Panthers are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games after scoring less than 15 points in their previous game.
  • Patriots are 8-1 ATS in their last 9 games following a straight up win.

This is an interesting total call because Carolina’s offense just isn’t the same without injured Pro Bowl tight end Greg Olsen. And now Newton’s No. 1 receiver, Kelvin Benjamin, could miss Week 4 with a knee injury suffered vs. the Saints. There’s not much else for Newton to throw to other than rookie running back Christian McCaffrey. The Patriots, meanwhile, shockingly rank last in the NFL in yards allowed, an unthinkable number under Bill Belichick. That unit was No. 1 in the NFL last year in scoring defense. Carolina ranks No. 2 in total defense but was pushed around by New Orleans last week.

  • Over is 8-2 in Panthers last 10 road games vs. a team with a winning home record.
  • Over is 7-0 in Patriots last 7 games overall.
