Who would have thought that arguably the best game of Week 3 would feature Atlanta and Detroit? Could be a potential playoff preview as both lead their divisions.

Atlanta Falcons at Detroit Lions (+2.5, 48.5)

It's never too early to get a win over another potential playoff foe in terms of a tiebreaker for home-field advantage. Could the Falcons be on letdown alert here? I think so. Survivor Pick: Detroit.

Have the Falcons finally put their 28-3 Super Bowl collapse behind them? Sunday night's fairly easy win over Green Bay in an NFC title game rematch might have done the trick. The Falcons are just the fourth Super Bowl loser to start the next season 2-0. They are clearly contenders again, but I do think there could be a bit of a letdown here off beating the Packers, officially opening the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium and because the Lions aren't a marquee opponent. One advantage Atlanta will have is an extra 24 hours of rest as the Lions played Monday night at the Giants, where they dominated defensively in a 24-10 victory. It's just the second 2-0 start in Matthew Stafford's career. The Lions are usually a different beast at home, and the Falcons didn't look sharp on the road in Week 1 in barely escaping Chicago.

  • Falcons are 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games after allowing more than 250 yards passing in their previous game.
  • Lions are 6-2 ATS in their last 8 home games.

Many had questions how the Atlanta offense would fare this season after losing offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan to San Francisco and that head coaching job. No worries under new OC Steve Sarkisian thus far. The Falcons torched the Packers on Thursday night, and Matt Ryan is averaging nearly 10 yards per pass attempt. Stafford often struggles outdoors and that was the case Monday night, but the Lions put up 35 points in their home opener vs. Arizona. The Detroit defense looks vastly improved in 2017, but the fact this is a dome game should lead to a track meet.

  • Over is 17-3-1 in Falcons last 21 games overall.
  • Over is 33-15-3 in Lions last 51 games after allowing less than 15 points in their previous game.
