The complete betting card on offer for Week 3 NFL games are laid out in this cheat sheet, along with matchup analysis, stats, trends, injury reports, and the latest, up-to-date NFL odds available at top sports betting sites.

NFL Betting Recap Week 2

Overall, the favourites went 14-2 SU and 7-9 ATS over underdogs; home teams went 11-5 SU and 8-8 ATS against road teams; and the total went OVER in 11 of the 16 games (11-4-1).

The largest underdogs to win straight up were the Las Vegas Raiders (+4, ML +172), beating the New Orleans Saints 34-24 on Monday. At the same time, Sunday’s biggest underdogs to win straight up were the Los Angeles Rams (+2, ML +125), beating the Eagles 37-19 at Lincoln Financial Field.

The San Diego Chargers, led by rookie quarterback Justin Herbert, emerged as the biggest underdogs to cover (+9) in a 23-20 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. Also, pulling off the surprise cover were the Jaguars (+7) in a 33-30 loss to the Titans, as well as the Dolphins (+6) in a 31-28 loss to the Bills.

The biggest favourites to cover the point spread in week 2 were Tampa Bay Buccaneers (-9) in a 31-17 win over Carolina Panthers; the San Francisco 49ers (-7) in a 31-13 win over NY Jets. Baltimore Ravens (-7.6) in a 33-16 win over Houston Texans and Arizona Cardinals (-7) in a 30-15 win over Washington.

Thursday Night Football

Miami Dolphins (0-2-0) vs. Jacksonville Jaguars (1-1-0)

Thursday, September 24, 2020 – 8:20 PM EST – TIAA Bank Field, Jacksonville

The search for the first win on the season continues for the Miami Dolphins after they succumbed to a 31-28 defeat at home to the Buffalo Bills in week 2. Miami did have the lead at one point in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t close out Buffalo for the straight up win. On the bright side, they did cover as the 6-point road underdogs to improve to 1-1-0 ATS on the season.

Gardiner Minshew mania continues to thrive even though the Jaguars slipped to their first defeat of the season in week 2. The 33-30 loss to the Tennessee Titans was closer than the NFL odds had it and the Jaguars got the cover (+7 at closing doors) for their backers, improving to 2-0-0 ATS on the season.

Minshew tossed 3TDs in week 2, adding to the 3TDs he tossed in week 1 against the Colts. Overall, he has six TDs in the first two weeks of the season, joining good company: Russell Wilson, Aaron Rodgers, Matt Ryan, Ryan Tannehill and Josh Allen at the top of the leader board with the most TDs to date.

Jaguars have homefield advantage for week 3 against the Dolphins, which will be enhanced by fan attendance (25% capacity). Not surprisingly, the Jaguars opened as the nominal home faves at -1.5 with BookMaker, but the NFL line has moved up to -3 with most top sports betting sites. For those looking to back the Jaguars, the best line currently available is -3 (+105) with Heritage.

Chicago Bears (2-0-0) vs. Atlanta Falcons (0-2-0)

Sunday, September 27, 2020 – 1:00 PM EST – Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta

The Chicago Bears are 2-0 SU to start the 2020 NFL season, but it would seem the odds makers aren’t buying what they are selling. Across the NFL odds board, the Bears opened at the disadvantage for their week 3 clash with the winless Atlanta Falcons. What’s even more telling, the flow of early betting appears to be going against the Bears as the NFL line has moved to Bears +4 at BookMaker (at the time of writing on Monday).

The betting trend against the Bears is easily explained: they took advantage of two of the league’s suspect teams, Detroit Lions and New York Giants in succession. It’s difficult to get a measure of the Bears, as such.

The 0-2 Falcons many not be a powerhouse (not yet, at least), but they have the offensive firepower to outdo Mitch Trubisky and the Bears. They just need to get it together on both sides of the ball.

Last Sunday, the Falcons lost the plot, fritting away a 20-0 lead over the Dallas Stars to lose 40-39. It was one of the most crushing defeats suffered by the Falcons since the equally – if not more costly defeat – to the Patriots in Super Bowl LI.

First two home games in Atlanta are to be played without fans, according to a decision made back in August. The clash against the Bears marks the second home game the Falcons will play to an empty stadium. Hopefully, they give fans stuck at home due to Covid-19 safety regulations something to cheer about, otherwise Dann Quinn’s days in Atlanta might be numbered.

Los Angeles Rams (2-0-0) vs. Buffalo Bills (2-0-0)

Sunday, September 27, 2020 – 1:00 PM EST – Bills Stadium, Buffalo

The clash between the Rams and Bills sees to undefeated teams colliding in week 3. It goes without saying, something is going to have to give. Opening markets had the Rams, who opened at the disadvantage, doing all the giving. BookMaker opened this inter-conference clash with the Bills as the field-goal faves at home. However, the betting is split nearly down the middle between these two sides, prompting the NFL line to shrink to Bills -2 at BookMaker.

Clearly, there’s a lot to like about both teams. The Rams in particular as they are 2-0 SU and ATS, coming off a big win over the highly fancied Stars in week 1 and the Eagles in week 2. In both cases, the Rams were tipped as the underdogs at closing doors, only to put paid each time – and doing so convincingly as well. Rams boast a 10.5-point winning margin on average and a +11-point differential versus the spread. In their last outing, the Rams crushed the Eagles 37-19.

The Bills are 2-0 SU but 1-1 ATS with wins at the expense of the Jets and Dolphins. It’s fair to say, the Bills have yet to be tested outside of the AFC East and against better calibre teams. The Rams represent a considerable step up in difficulty and it wouldn’t be surprising if the NFL lines continues to move against the Bills as kick-off nears.

Washington (1-1-0) vs. Cleveland Browns (1-1-0)

Sunday, September 27, 2020 – 1:00 PM EST – FirstEnergy Stadium, Cleveland

The Cleveland Browns earned their first win of the season against the Cincinnati Bengals, defeating the Joe-Burrow-inspired Bengals 35-30. On the heels of the win, the Browns improved to 1-1-0 SU on the season but slipped to 0-2-0 ATS after they failed to cover as the 6-point home faves.

Going into week 3, the Browns are predictably tipped as the chalk. However, after opening as the -4 home faves, the Browns have somehow jumped out to -7 across various NFL odds boards, which might be getting a touch rich for NFL bettors. Indeed, the betting is split nearly down the middle with 47% of early bettors lapping up the points with Washington.

Washington is 1-1-0 SU and ATS on the season, coming off a losing effort against Arizona Cardinals in week 2, crashing back down to earth against Kyler Murray and the Cardinals in a 30-15 loss. It’s the second road game in as many weeks for Ron Rivera and the no-name team from the nation’s capital but: this matchup may not be as straightforward. Dwayne Haskins is a work in progress, its as yet uncertain what one will get from the second-year quarterback from game to game.

Tennessee Titans (2-0-0) vs. Minnesota Vikings (0-2-0)

Sunday, September 27, 2020 – 1:00 PM EST – U.S. Bank Stadium, Minneapolis

For two weeks in a row, the Tennessee Titans have had to work hard to get the “W.” The Denver Broncos took it to Ryan Tannehill and Co. in the first week of the season and then the Jaguars gave them a run for their money at Nissan Stadium in week 2. Both times, the Titans emerged winners by the skin of their teeth, winning only by a handful of points.

As it is, the Titans enter week 3 of the NFL season with a 2-0-0 SU mark but they also bring a 0-2-0 ATS mark to the table, underscored by a 2.5 winning margin on average and a -2.8 differential versus the spread.

The Minnesota Vikings are wholly off colour and totally off their game. Back-to-back losses to start the season – 43-34 to Packers and 28-11 to the Colts – have the Vikings hanging out in the NFC North basement, alongside the winless Detroit Lions.

Most concerningly, the Vikings offense never looked to threaten in either game, Against the Colts, Cousins threw three interceptions to zero touchdowns. The post Kevin Stefanski era isn’t getting off to quite the start the Vikings had hoped for with Gary Kubiak taking over.

Things aren’t going to get any easier for the Vikings in week 2 with the Titans coming to town, as indicated by the NFL odds. The Vikings opened as the 1-point home dogs but the NFL line has moved to Vikings +2.5 already. It wouldn’t be surprising if this line closes with the Vikings as field-goal underdogs at home.

Las Vegas Raiders (2-0-0) vs. New England Patriots (1-1-0)

Sunday, September 27, 2020 – 1:00 PM EST – Gillette Stadium, Foxboro

The Las Vegas Raiders are coming off a huge upset on MNF, beating the New Orleans Saints 34-24. The upshot of which has the Raiders up 2-0-0 SU and ATS with a 7-point winning margin on average and a +7.5 point differential versus the spread.

To say this is the best start by the Raiders under Jon Gruden, since he returned to the Raiders two years ago, is no understatement. The win over the Saints in fact marks the first time the Raiders beat a relevant team with Gruden on the side-lines. Prior to Monday’s statement win, the Raiders only ever beat up on sub-par opposition, teams at .500 or under.

Whether the Raiders can keep the momentum going remains to be seen, the schedule doesn’t get any easier. And it begins with a tough date against the Patriots in week 3, who are rounding out into fine form with Cam Newton as the offensive pivot.

Granted the Patriots are coming off a loss to the Seattle Seahawks in SNF, but Newton was in a word, spectacular. It was Newton 2015. Cam Newton, Josh McDaniels, Bill Belichick – the triplet just works and what they’ve got going – based on the first couple of weeks – is awe-inspiring. If they get any better – which they should – the Patriots could prove the surprise package of the AFC.

Consider that the Patriots opened as the 5,5-point faves but the NFL line is moving in their favour, now up to 6.5-points, even though the Raiders beat the Saints on Monday. That’s telling.

San Francisco 49ers (1-1-0) vs. New York Giants (0-2-0)

Sunday, September 27, 2020 – 1:00 PM EST – MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford

The NFC Champions are in trouble and the season is only two weeks old; decimated by injuries across the roster, Kyle Shanahan and the Niners could be looking ahead to a very long season even though they did take the 31-13 win over the Jets at MetLife in week 2 and improved to a 1-1-0 SU and ATS mark.

The Niners went into the game against the Jets without Richard Sherman, George Kittle and Dee Ford. They wrapped up the day with additions to the injury list that included Nick Bosa and Solomon Thomas (both out for the season with torn ACLs), Raheem Mostert (knee) and Jimmy Garoppolo (high ankle sprain). Garoppolo sat out the second-half, leaving back-up Nick Mullens to finish the game against the Jets.

For a second straight week, the Niners will be playing at MetLife. On paper, the Giants look to be there for the taking with a 0-2-0 SU and 1-1-0 ATS mark. Moreover, the Giants also suffered a blow in week 2, losing Saquon Barkley for the season with a torn MCL. That said, the NFL line is on the move for this game and its moving against the Niners, who opened as the 6.5-point faves but are now trading at -4 with BookMaker.

Cincinnati Bengals (0-2-0) vs. Philadelphia Eagles (0-2-0)

Sunday, September 27, 2020 – 1:00 PM EST – Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia

The date between the Bengals and Eagles in week 3 is effectively a clash of the winless. Something’s gotta give when these two sides meet at Lincoln Financial Field, as one team will slip to a 0-3 SU mark and the other will improve to 1-2 SU. The question is which will be which?

According to the best sports betting sites, the Eagles are the likeliest to emerge triumphant against the Bengals next Sunday. The Bengals opened laying -5.5 and jumped out to -6 and -6.5 as soon as trading opened.

That said, the Eagles looked god-awful in the first two games of the season. Dwayne Haskins shredded the Eagles defense in week 1, as if he were some reincarnation of Patrick Mahomes. Then, Jared Goff and the Rams took their turn to eviscerate the Eagles 37-19 at Lincoln Financial Field last Sunday.

In fact, it got so bad that whoever was responsible for channelling crowd noise into the empty stadium decided raining “boos” down on Carson Wentz and the Eagles was appropriate.

The Bengals, meanwhile, lost to the Browns 35-30 in Thursday Night Football. It was a mixed affair for No.1 draft pick, Joe Burrow. Too many errors and missed cues outweighed the positive plays, proving partly responsible for the loss. Burrow himself graded his performance a lowly “D.” Bengals are 0-2-0 SU and 1-1-0 ATS with a 4-point losing margin on average and +0.2 differential versus the spread.

Houston Texans (0-2-0) vs. Pittsburgh Steelers (2-0-0)

Sunday, September 27, 2020 – 1:00 PM EST – Heinz Field, Pittsburgh

The Steelers are flying high in the AFC North, cosying up to the Baltimore Ravens atop the standings with a 2-0-0 SU and ATS mark after beating the Giants in week 1 and then backing it up with a win over the Broncos. Next up are the Texans, who were supposed to be a tough ask for Pittsburgh at home. However, the Texans are down in the dumps after two laps, and the Steelers may well fancy their chances against the reigning AFC South champions

The Steelers opened as the 5.5-point home favourites on the NFL odds board but the NFL line has dropped as low as Steelers -3.5 with several sports betting shops, including Betonline, Bovada and Heritage to name a few.

The Texans have had a brutal schedule with the Chiefs and Ravens in the first two weeks of the season. If those two matchups weren’t soul-crushing enough, week 3 might just go for the jugular. In the Steelers, the Texans will come up against one of the toughest defenses in the league. (Gulp!). Moreover, things don’t ease up for the Texans with dates against Minnesota, Jacksonville, Tennessee and Green Bay in the coming weeks. (Double gulp!)

To all intents and purposes, this is a must-win game for the Texans, who are currently propping up the AFC South as the only winless team in the division. Should they slip to an 0-3 SU start or further, it’s hard to see how they’ll recover.

New York Jets (0-2-0) vs. Indianapolis Colts (1-1-0)

Sunday, September 27, 2020 – 4:05 PM EST – Lucas Oil Stadium, Indianapolis

The New York Jets are wholly off colour and form, prompting many top-rated sportsbooks to serve up Adam Gase as the top favourite NFL coach to be first fired this season. The Jets are 0-2-0 SU and ATS, underpinned by a whopping 14-point losing margin on average and a -7.2 differential versus spread.

That the Jets go into week 3 as one of the biggest underdogs in NFL betting markets isn’t surprising at all. Indeed, they’re the only double-digit underdogs so far, catching as high as -11 points with both Bovada and Youwager.

The Colts are 1-1-0 SU and ATS, flush off a solid 28-11 win over the Minnesota Vikings at Lucas Oil Stadium in week 2. The Colts lost their opener to the Jacksonville Jaguars, which was considered a huge upset in the betting seeing as the Colts closed as the touchdown faves on the road. However, they righted the ship in week 2 and raised their stock in NFL betting markets by beating one of last season’s playoff teams quite handily.

Carolina Panthers (0-2-0) vs. Los Angeles Chargers (1-1-0)

Sunday, September 27, 2020 – 4:05 PM EST – SoFi Stadium, Inglewood

First-year NFL head coach, Matt Rhule, is 0-2-0 SU and ATS going into week 3, after losses to the Raiders and Bucs. The Panthers lost 34-30 to the Raiders at home in week 1 and then fell to the Bucs 31-17 in week 2 on the road. Most concerning, is the loss of Christian McCaffrey to an ankle injury for at least 4 to 6 weeks.

For a second straight week, the Panthers are on the road. The Chargers, who are 1-1 SU and 2-0 ATS, loom large. The defense is coming off a stellar performance against the Chiefs and they’re likely to pick up from where they left off against the Panthers.

NFL Hub Banner

Justin Herbert made a surprise debut for the Los Angeles Chargers in week 2, depositing a performance that was by all accounts stupendous. Herbert and the Chargers had the reigning Super Bowl champions on the ropes and very nearly pulled off the shocking upset, before Mahomes turned things around late in the game and lifted the Chiefs to the narrow win in overtime.

It remains to be seen whether Tyrod Taylor will be the starter for this Sunday clash or whether rookie Justin Herbert will start for a second straight week. Nevertheless, bookmakers have gone to press with the Chargers favoured at 6 points, only that NFL line jumped out to Chargers -6.5 quickly. That betting trends appear to have a lot to do with the expectation Herbert will start again. The rookie passed for 311 yards, a touchdown and an interception. He also rushed for touchdown in the game.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1-1-0) vs. Denver Broncos (0-2-0)

Sunday, September 27, 2020 – 4:25 PM EST – Empower Field at Mile High, Denver

Tom Brady finally got his first win as a Tampa Bay Buccaneer, defeating the Carolina Panthers 31-17 on Sunday. Importantly, with the New Orleans dropping Monday Night’s clash with the Raiders, the Buccaneers are now atop the division, alongside the New Orleans with a 1-1-0 SU tie. Thus, the premium on the win in week 3 couldn’t be any greater.

The Denver Broncos are coming off a second straight defeat in week 2, losing to Pittsburgh 26-21 on the road. Looming large is the growing injury list for Vic Fangio with 11 players set to miss week 3, including most notably Drew Lock (out for a few weeks with a shoulder injury) and Courtland Sutton (torn ACL and out for the season). This follows the loss of Von Miller before the season started, along with Philip Lindsay (toe), A.J. Bouye (shoulder), Dre’Mont Jones (knee), Davontae Harris (hamstring) and Austin Fort (knee).

Brady and the Bucs haven’t tapped into their full potential but they’re improving from game to game. It’s no surprise, the Bucs enter this week’s clash with the Broncos at Mile High as the road faves, laying 6 points to the walking wounded Broncos.

Detroit Lions (0-2-0) vs. Arizona Cardinals (2-0-0)

Sunday, September 27, 2020 – 4:25 PM EST – State Farm Stadium, Glendale

The emergence of Kyler Murray in 2020 is nothing short of impressive, even though many NFL insiders and experts predicted it. The second-year quarterback is off to a flying start with the Arizona Cardinals, sat in a three-way tie with the Seattle Seahawks and Los Angeles Rams atop the NFC West standings with a 2-0-0 SU mark.

The Cardinals opened the season with the big upset over the Niners. In week 2, they roughed up Washington in a 30-15 win that saw them cover the -7.5 closing point spread. As it is, the Cardinals are 2-0-0 ATS with a 9.5 winning margin on average and a +9.2 differential versus the spread.

Last season, the Cardinals faced the Detroit Lions as considerable underdogs, only to play them close and force the tie. This time around, the Cardinals enter as the considerable favourites, laying -6 points to the Lions. The Lions are off to another slow start to the season with Matt Patricia, taking a 0-2 SU mark into week 3 after losses to the Bears and Packers.

In week 1, the Lions blew a considerable lead to the Bears. In week 2, they were outscored 39-7 from the second quarter onwards. This game may well prove a blow out, given how hot the Cardinals are right now and the evident chemistry between Kyler Murray and DeAndre Hopkins.

Dallas Cowboys (1-1-0) vs. Seattle Seahawks (2-0-0)

Sunday, September 27, 2020 – 4:25 PM EST – CenturyLink Field, Seattle

The Dallas Cowboys pulled a rabbit out of the hat, coming from 0-20 to defeat the Atlanta Falcons 40-39. It was a wild game, with more plot twists than a Shakespearean play, but a crucial win for the Cowboys as they avoided the dreaded 0-2 SU start in Mike McCarthy’s first year with the team.

That said the Cowboys defense leaves a lot to be desired, as well the offense was slow out of the gates, patchy and out of sync in the early going. Dak Prescott and Co. need to clean up their act if they hope to be legitimate contenders this season. As it is, the Cowboys have a lot of issues, which better teams will be able to expose with greater success than the Falcons did.

The Seahawks emerge with a 2-0-0 SU and ATS mark, beating the New England Patriots in a highly entertaining Sunday Night Football clash 35-30. Top MVP-candidate, Russell Wilson, tossed 5TDs and passed for 429 yards in the win, but it took a fierce goal-line stance to stop Cam Newton and the Patriots snatching the win at CenturyLink Field.

Ironically, defense won the game in the end but the Seahawks defense remains a concern. They gave up 464 yards to the Patriots and, overall, the Seahawks are dead last in this defensive category after two weeks of the 2020 NFL season.

By the NFL odds, this game stacks up intriguingly. The Seahawks opened as the field-goal faves but quickly jumped out to -5 with most sportsbooks. The total for this game is one of the highest on the NFL odds board, opening at a whopping 56 points.

Green Bay Packers (2-0-0) vs. New Orleans Saints (1-1-0)

Sunday, September 27, 2020 – 8:20 PM EST – Mercedes-Benz Superdome, New Orleans

Aaron Rodgers and the Packers picked up from where they left off last season, racing out of the gates behind a 2-0-0 SU start with wins over NFC North rivals, Vikings and Lions. Aaron Rodgers is playing lights out and features among the league’s top quarterback with 6TDs to his credit.

Next up for the Packers is a tough date against the New Orleans Saints at the Superdome. The Saints are flush off a crippling loss to the Raiders at the brand new Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, slipping to a 1-1-0 SU and ATS start. Drew Brees wasn’t up to his lofty standards, and the absence of Michael Thomas was sorely felt in the 34-24 loss. However, the Saints shot themselves in the foot as well, incurring a slew of costly penalties that enabled the Raiders to win the game.

On balance, this is a game between two likely NFC heavyweights. As it is, the Packers nudge ahead of the Saints in all facets of the game. And yet, the Packers go into this game at the disadvantage, catching 3 points on the NFL odds board. The game total is the third-highest for week 3 at 52 points.

Kansas City Chiefs (2-0-0) vs. Baltimore Ravens (2-0-0)

Monday, September 28, 2020 – 8:15 PM EST – M&T Bank Stadium, Baltimore

It’s a clash of the AFC titans when the Kansas City Chiefs and Baltimore Ravens collide at M&T Bank Stadium on Monday night. Alas, it’s going to go ahead without any fans in attendance. as the state of Maryland has ruled out any mass gatherings for the foreseeable due to on-going Covid-19 concerns.

Kansas City Chiefs were forced to go five quarters last Sunday against the Chargers before eventually taking the 23-20 win in overtime, It wasn’t the kind of game one has become accustomed to seeing from Mahomes and the high-octane Chiefs offense, and that’s a credit to the Chargers defense. That said it was vintage Mahomes in the end as he led the Chiefs to another remarkable come-from-behind win.

Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens have not only picked up from where they left off, but the wide consensus is that they are even better than they were last season. The Ravens are 2-0-0 SU and ATS, underscored by a whopping 24.5 winning margin and a +17.2 differential versus the spread. The Ravens had their way with the Browns in a blowout 38-6 win in week 1. They then crushed the Texans 33-16.

This is a fitting curtain-dropper on week 3’s NFL betting card and a likely precursor to the AFC championship game. The Ravens opened as the -1.5 home faves but jumped out to -3 following the Chiefs’ less than stellar win over the Chargers. The total is the second-highest on the NFL odds board, trading anywhere between 53.5 and 54 points.
