NFL Week 2 Game by Game Guide: Matchups, Stats, Trends, Injury Report, and Odds

With week 2 of the NFL regular season approaching fast, we set the scene for the entire slate of NFL games in this NFL cheat sheet. The first week of the NFL season is in the books. It was a muted affair around the league with most stands sat empty but otherwise, the action on the field was thrilling for the most part. Some teams and/or players however were massive disappointments, clearly either still in pre-season training mode or totally off their game – [cough] Cleveland Browns [cough], Stephen Gostowski [cough]…

NFL Betting Recap Week 1

Overall, the favorites went 10-6 SU and 9-7 ATS in week 1 over underdogs, and home teams went 8-8 SU and 9-7 ATS against road teams. The Over cashed in 9 of 16 games.

Several big underdogs won straight up in the first week of the much-anticipated 2020 NFL season, including the Cardinals (ML +245), Jaguars (ML +280), and Washington (ML +210).

The largest favorites to cover the closing point spread included the Chiefs (-7) in a 34-20 win over the Texans; the Patriots (-7) in a 21-11 win over the Dolphins; the Ravens (-7) in a 38-6 win over the Browns; Bills (-6.5) in a 27-17 win over the Jets; and the Steelers (-6) in a 26-16 win over the Giants.

The highest total score of the week belonged to Aaron Rodgers and the Packers, who outgunned the Vikings 43-34. The lowest total, meanwhile, was a 16-13 win by the Chargers over the Bengals.

Thursday Night Football

Cincinnati Bengals (0-1-0) vs. Cleveland Browns (0-1-0)

Thursday, September 17, 2020 – 8:20 PM EST – FirstEnergy Stadium, Cleveland

NFL Keynotes: The Bengals nearly took the Chargers into overtime, but on the final play kicker Randy Bullock pulled up lame and botched the potential game-tying field goal. It was a heartbreaking loss for the No.1 draft pick.

Joe Burrow, who held up well in his NFL debut and came close to joining a select few rookie quarterbacks to win in their first game.

The Browns were steamrolled by the Ravens in their season opener at M&T Stadium and Baker Mayfield and the offense barely struck an audible chord in the embarrassing 38-6 rout.

Both AFC North rivals will be looking for their first win in the NFL in week 2. FirstEnergy Stadium will have a limited number of fans in the stadium (6.000 approx.).

Sunday, Week 2 NFL

New York Giants (0-1-0) vs. Chicago Bears (1-0-0)

Sunday, September 20, 2020 - 1:00 PM EST - Soldier Field, Chicago

NFL Keynotes: After a slow start against the Detroit Lions, Mitch Trubisky perked up in the fourth quarter, tossed three TDs and led the Bears to a winning season-opener on the road. Go figure!. As a result, the Bears are tied with the Packers at the top of the NFC North with a 1-0-0 mark.

Daniel Jones and the Giants put up a valiant effort against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday Night Football, but they ultimately came up short in the 26-16 loss.

The clash between the Bears and Giants is firmly cornered with the hosts, but can the Bears continue the momentum at the expense of the Giants to both win and cover a rather hefty spread?

Atlanta Falcons (0-1-0) vs. Dallas Cowboys (0-1-0)

Sunday, September 20, 2020 - 1:00 PM EST - AT&T Stadium, Arlington

NFL Keynotes: Both the Atlanta Falcons and Dallas Cowboys enter week 2 in search of their first win of the season. Both offenses were talked up something huge ahead of the season but each struggled in its contests. The Falcons fell flat in their home opener against the Seattle Seahawks and lost 38-25. The Cowboys, meanwhile, succumbed to a lackluster 20-17 loss to the Los Angeles Rams on the road. Indeed, the Rams forced the issue in a defensive battle with the Cowboys and rendered Dak Prescott and all his enviable weapons a moot point.

AT&T Stadium will be host to fans for the week 2 clash against the Atlanta Falcons, but the exact number that will be allowed to attend is yet to be determined. Whether fan support will perk up the Cowboys in week 2, remains to be seen. They’ll need all the help they can get because in the betting the Cowboys are fading, slipping from an opening -7 to as low as -4.5 with several sports betting shops, including BookMaker, Bovada, and Heritage, to name a few.

Detroit Lions (0-1-0) vs. Green Bay Packers (1-0-0)

Sunday, September 20, 2020 - 1:00 PM EST - Lambeau Field, Green Bay

NFL Keynotes: Aaron Rodgers and the Packers burst out of the gates firing at all cylinders. The veteran quarterback reminded everyone why he was still viable and relevant, tossing 4TDs in the Packers’ 43-34 win over the Vikings.

The Detroit Lions, by contrast, fritted away a lead over the Chicago Bears on route to the narrow 27-23 loss. It was a bit of a head-scratcher that left much to be desired.

For a second straight week, both the Packers and Lions are facing a divisional contest. The premium on the win couldn’t be any greater in the broad spectrum of the NFC North title race. With the Packers up 1-0-0 in the division and coming off a resounding win over the Vikings, it’s no surprise they are the significant home favorites on the NFL odds board.

Jacksonville Jaguars (1-0-0) vs. Tennessee Titans (1-0-0)

Sunday, September 20, 2020 - 1:00 PM EST - Nissan Stadium, Nashville

NFL Keynotes: Minshew Mania is officially back on. Gardiner Minshew and the Jacksonville Jaguars defied the NFL odds in their season-opener, upsetting the favored Indianapolis Colts 27-20. On the heels of the winning account, the Jaguars delivered one of the biggest upsets in money-line-betting markets.

The Titans were mired in a slugfest with the Broncos on Monday Night Football, only just eking out the 16-14 victory. When all was said and done, Ryan Tannehill and the Titans came through as the nominal favorites in money-line betting markets but they failed to cover the closing -3.5 point spread.

In the betting, this contest between AFC South rivals is firmly cornered with the Titans on one of the heftiest spreads on the NFL odds board. Titans opened as the -9 home faves but some of the best sportsbooks have already gone as high as Titans at -11. A win here will see one of these two take control of the AFC South division.

Minnesota Vikings (0-1-0) vs. Indianapolis Colts (0-1-0)

Sunday, September 20, 2020 - 1:00 PM EST - Lucas Oil Stadium, Indianapolis

NFL Keynotes: The Vikings came out flat against the Packers and suffered for it in a 43-34 loss. Kirk Cousins threw for a couple of touchdowns in the game, but he was playing from behind all the way through and simply couldn’t match his counterpart.

Philip Rivers’ debut with the Colts didn’t quite meet the expectations set out by NFL experts and bookmakers. The Colts were the road faves to the Jaguars, laying a touchdown at closing doors. Tale told, the Colts lost 27-20 and now prop up the AFC South alongside the Houston Texans. One has to consider, this is a must-win game for Rivers and the Colts.

Local officials will allow 2,500 fans at Lucas Oil Stadium for the Colts’ home-opener against the Vikings.

Opening Line: Colts -2.5 (-110) with Bovada

Buffalo Bills (1-0-0) vs. Miami Dolphins (0-1-0)

Sunday, September 20, 2020 - 1:00 PM EST - Hard Rock Stadium, Miami Gardens

NFL Keynotes: Josh Allen and the Bills picked up from where they left off in the 2019 season and took it to the NY Jets. The Bills, who closed as the -6.5 point home faves, came through for their backers in the 27-17 win.

The Dolphins are flush off a messy 21-11 loss to the Patriots. Ryan Fitzpatrick was off his game, tossing three interceptions and zero touchdowns. Ryan Fitzpatrick is set to start against the Bills in this week 2 clash but one wonders whether he’s on borrowed time.

San Francisco 49ers

San Francisco 49ers (0-1-0) vs. New York Jets (1-0-0)

Sunday, September 20, 2020 - 1:00 PM EST - MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford

NFL Keynotes: The San Francisco 49ers are in a spot of trouble. Following week 1, they’re the only winless team in the NFC West after the Seahawks, Rams, and Cardinals won. It’s not the end of the world yet for the Super Bowl runners-up, but week 2 is a must-win game. The NFC West is one of the most competitive divisions and falling behind 0-2 in the first two weeks of the 2020 NFL season would be tantamount to disaster.

The New York Jets failed to impress in the loss to the Buffalo Bills in week 1. Adam Gase is on the hot seat and his prospects don’t look promising with a week 2 clash against a San Francisco-side that practically everyone expects will come up trumps. The NFL line is moving against the Jets as some top-rated sportsbooks are already trading the Jets at +7 or higher.

Los Angeles Rams (1-0-0) vs. Philadelphia Eagles (0-1-0)

Sunday, September 20, 2020 - 1:00 PM EST - Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia

NFL Keynotes: Just like in 2019 when both the Eagles and Cowboys did everything and anything but to win the NFC East title, it seems the pair have picked up from where they left off. After week 1, the only winning team in the division is none other than…drumroll… Washington. The rest walked away empty-handed. Worse yet, the Eagles suffered the ignominy of losing to Washington, fritting away a commanding first-half lead in the process.

The Los Angeles Rams are buoyed by a solid win over the Cowboys and will prove a real challenge for the Eagles that are already in trouble with a slew of injuries. How the Eagles are the NFL betting favorites here at early doors is a bit of a mystery.

Denver Broncos (0-1-0) vs. Pittsburgh Steelers (1-0-0)

Sunday, September 20, 2020 - 1:00 PM EST - Heinz Field, Pittsburgh

NFL Keynotes: Big Ben’s return to the NFL was met with a success on Monday Night Football as the Steelers took care of business against the Giants. It looked a bit dicey at times but in the end, they got the job done.

The Denver Broncos failed to bank on home advantage against the Tennessee Titans in their home opener on Monday Night. Next up is a tough Steelers outfit that will look to bank on home advantage and keep pace with the Baltimore Ravens in the chase for the AFC North title.

Carolina Panthers (0-1-0) vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (0-1-0)

Sunday, September 20, 2020 - 1:00 PM EST - Raymond James Stadium, Tampa Bay

NFL Keynotes: After an entire offseason of hype, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were dealt a dose of reality by the New Orleans Saints. That said, it was always going to be a tough matchup for Tom Brady and Co. against the divisional standard.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers won’t be getting any favors though as the Carolina Panthers played really well in their loss to the Los Angeles Raiders. Panthers lost a 34-30 thriller but Teddy Bridgewater and Co. showed that they could potentially be dark horses in the NFC South.

The game is cornered wholeheartedly with the Bucs but they can’t take the NFL odds for granted. Tom Brady and the Bucs will need to sharpen their game for a Panthers team that means business.

Arizona Cardinals

Washington (1-0-0) vs. Arizona Cardinals (1-0-0)

Sunday, September 20, 2020 - 4:05 PM EST - State Farm Stadium, Glendale

NFL Keynotes: Kyler Murray and the Cardinals underscored their dark horse credentials by pulling off one of the biggest upsets in week 1 of the NFL 2020 season. To upset the Niners on the road is no mean trick. Kyler Murray MVP buzz is real!.

Washington is also flush off an upset against a divisional rival, beating the Eagles in a come-from-behind 27-17 win. It was quite a remarkable turnaround for Washington in the second-half and they thoroughly deserved the win. Moreover, Dwayne Haskins may have quelled some of the criticism.

This will be an interesting matchup between two teams that seem to be punching above their weight class. Obviously, the Cardinals are the solid favorites as the hosts.

Kansas City Chiefs (1-0-0) vs. Los Angeles Chargers (1-0-0)

Sunday, September 20, 2020 - 4:25 PM EST - SoFi Stadium, Inglewood

NFL Keynotes: The Kansas City Chiefs picked up from where they left off last season, picking up the pivotal “W” at the expense of the Houston Texans in Thursday Night Football. Patrick Mahomes led the Chiefs to a commanding 34-20 win and the Chiefs easily covered as one of the biggest home favorites.

The Los Angeles Chargers won their season-opener against the Cincinnati Bengals but the victory left much to be desired. It wasn’t convincing to start. Then, there’s the fact that Bengals’ kicker botched a potential game-tying field goal.

The Chargers won’t get away with such a performance against AFC West rivals and Super Bowl champions, Kansas City Chiefs, in week. They could be in for a rude- awakening. Indeed, the NFL line is moving in favor of the Chiefs already at some top-rated sportsbooks, going as high as Chiefs -9 – an NFL line that is available at Bovada.

Baltimore Ravens

Baltimore Ravens (1-0-0) vs. Houston Texans (0-1-0)

Sunday, September 20, 2020 - 4:25 PM EST - NRG Stadium, Houston

NFL Keynotes: The Houston Texans are getting no favors from the schedulers, as for a second straight week the Texans are set to face one of the best teams in the league and one of several short-odds-on faves to win Super Bowl LV.

The Texans succumbed to a 34-20 loss to the Chiefs in week 1 but the game was worse than the score would suggest. The Texans clearly lacked a one-two punch on offense and that doesn’t bode well for a date against the Ravens, who were up to their old tricks against Cleveland in their season-opener.

Lamar Jackson and Co., were nearly perfect in a 38-6 victory over the Browns. Jackson tossed for 3 TDs, completing 20 of 25 passes for 275 yards. Not for nothing did John Harbaugh comment. “ Lamar Jackson just played a phenomenal game.”

Bookmakers opened this game with the Ravens significantly favored on the road, and early NFL betting trends are leaning towards the Ravens. It remains to be seen whether the Texans can rise to the occasion and keep this game close, never mind pull off the upset.

Sunday Night Football, Week 2 NFL

New England Patriots (1-0-0) vs. Seattle Seahawks (1-0-0)

Sunday, September 20, 2020 - 8:15 PM EST - CenturyLink Field, Seattle

NFL Keynotes: Russell Wilson and Co. were sensational in a convincing win over the Atlanta Falcons in week 1. Russell Wilson is proving to be one of the best deep-ball throwers in the league and the Seahawks are shaping up to be serious contenders in the NFC West.

Cam Newton’s debut with the Patriots was a success as he rushed for a couple of TDs in the 21-11 win over the Miami Dolphins. It’s fair to say, the Patriots got off easy with a straightforward opening game. Week 2 will show whether the Patriots and Newton are the real deal because the Seahawks will be tough to beat at CenturyLink Field, surely.

Monday Night Football, Week 2 NFL

New Orleans Saints (1-0-0) vs. Las Vegas Raiders (1-0-0)

Monday, September 21, 2020 - 8:20 PM EST - Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas

NFL Keynotes: The New Orleans Saints were fired up for their season-opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, coming through with the 34-25 win. It’s fair to say, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers weren’t totally in sync and on their game.

Las Vegas Raiders had to fight hard to take the win over the Carolina Panthers in week 1. In a riveting back-and-forth contest, they eventually pulled off the feat in a 34-30 win.

Both teams are coming off impressive wins in week 1 but something’s gotta give when they collide at the brand-new Allegiant Stadium. The Saints are the road faves but the Raiders might well fancy their chances.
