This could be the best rivalry in the NFC West sooner rather than later as the 49ers are ascending and the Rams already are a playoff team. Survivor Pick: LA Rams.

San Francisco 49ers at Los Angeles Rams (-4, 45)

The Rams are NFC West champions, the franchise’s first division title since 2003 back in the St. Louis days. However, the team can’t get higher than the third seed in the NFC after losing to both the Philadelphia Eagles and Minnesota Vikings during the season. They win a head-to-head tiebreaker against the Saints, who should win the NFC South in Week 17. If the Rams win and Falcons beat the Panthers, Los Angeles would host Atlanta on wild-card weekend. The Rams won at the Titans last Sunday, 27-23, to wrap up the division and likely the NFL Coach of the Year Award for Sean McVay. The 31-year-old, the youngest head coach in modern NFL history, took over a team that ranked last in the NFL in every major offensive category last season and helped turn it into one that ranks first in scoring (31.0 ppg). The 49ers have just five wins, but this season has been a huge success thanks to the Halloween trade for quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. The Niners are 4-0 with him as their starting quarterback. Jimmy G torched Jacksonville’s NFL-best defense last Sunday in 44-33 victory. The Niners could be a playoff team as soon as next season with tons of cap space and the right draft picks.

  • 49ers are 5-14-1 ATS vs. a team with a winning record.
  • Rams are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games overall.

Could Rams running back Todd Gurley overtake Tom Brady to win the NFL MVP Award? In the win over the Jaguars, Gurley gained 276 scrimmage yards, more than any player all season, and had two touchdowns. If he scores twice here, Gurley will be the first running back to top 20 touchdowns in a season since Seattle’s Shaun Alexander in 2005 (who did win MVP). Gurley holds a six-touchdown lead over every other player in the league, with no other running back, wide receiver or tight end topping 13 TDs. Meanwhile, with the Niners, Garoppolo is 100 of 145 for 1,268 yards with five touchdowns and three interceptions for a passer rating of 98.9. He's also rushed for a score. That yardage total is the best among all NFL quarterbacks in their first four starts with a team in league history. How little we knew about these franchises when they met in Week 3, a shocking 41-39 Rams shootout win. Jared Goff threw for 292 yards and three touchdowns and Gurley ran for two TDs and caught another. Now we know the Rams are a dynamic offensive team. The Niners got within the final score on a Carlos Hyde 1-yard run with 2:13 left but they had to go for 2 because of an earlier missed PAT. It failed. Brian Hoyer was the San Francisco QB that day, but he’s long gone in the wake of the Garoppolo trade.

  • Over is 5-2 in 49ers last 7 vs. a team with a winning record.
  • Over is 7-1 in Rams last 8 vs. a team with a losing record.
