It’s one of those tough 10 a.m. Pacific time starts for the Los Angeles Chargers as they face a must-win game to keep their playoff hopes alive. Survivor Pick: LA Chargers.

Los Angeles Chargers at New York Jets (+6.5, 42)

Since the beginning of the 2015 season, the Chargers are just 3-9 straight-up in games played during the early window. The Bolts can still win the AFC West if they win out and Kansas City loses out, but the Chiefs surely aren’t losing this week at home to Miami. Los Angeles will be eliminated from playoff contention with a loss to the Jets, or if the Chiefs, Titans and Ravens all win. The Bolts must win this game and Week 17 at home vs. Oakland – both those things are very doable. The Titans must their last two games, which are home vs. the Rams and Jaguars. Buffalo must lose one of its final two. The Chargers only want to match the Bills for that final wild-card spot because they would lose the tiebreakers should they also tie with the Ravens and/or Titans. The Jets have played quite a bit over their heads this season but are eliminated from the playoffs. Will this be the final home game for head coach Todd Bowles? He’s probably still a goner. New York released WR Jeremy Kerley this week after he recently came off a four-game suspension. During the suspension, the Jets used rookies Chad Hansen and ArDarius Stewart in the receiver rotation. Now that they're eliminated from contention, the Jets' goal is to continue to develop those young players. Kerley finished the season with 22 catches, 217 yards and one touchdown.

  • Chargers are 6-0 ATS in their last 6 games following a straight up loss of more than 14 points.
  • Chargers are 14-6-1 ATS in their last 21 road games.

I don’t pretend to be an NFL talent evaluator, but why aren’t the Jets using the last two weeks to get a look at 2016 second-round quarterback Christian Hackenberg instead of starting Bryce Petty again? He was terrible in last week’s 31-19 loss in New Orleans, completing just 19 of 39 for 179 yards, one TD, two picks and rating of 49.0. On his first three trips to the red zone, he completed 2 of 5 passes for zero yards, a big reason why the Jets managed only 13 points on those possessions. Petty also struggled against standard pressure, completing only seven of 21 passes for 62 yards and two interceptions against four or fewer pass rushers -- the third-worst completion percentage this season. Finally, the former Baylor star was only 5-for-12 when targeting No. 1 wideout Robby Anderson. The Bolts lost one of their top playmakers this week when tight end Hunter Henry was placed on season-ending injured reserve with a lacerated kidney. Henry finished his 2017 season with five catches for 579 receiving yards and four touchdowns. The Chargers were 7-1 this season in games Henry was targeted at least five times. The Chargers will also be without LB Denzel Perryman and DT Corey Liuget against the Jets due to injury.

  • Under is 8-1 in Chargers last 9 vs. AFC.
  • Under is 7-2 in Jets last 9 games after allowing more than 30 points in their previous game.
