One of the better endings to a game this NFL season was when the Eagles edged the Giants in Week 3. This one won’t be that close. Survivor Pick: Philadelphia.

Philadelphia Eagles at New York Giants (+7.5, 40)

The Philadelphia Eagles won a thrilling game at the NFC West-leading Los Angeles Rams last Sunday to clinch Philly’s first NFC East title and playoff berth since 2013, but it has been a somber week in the City of Brotherly Love with the news that superstar quarterback Carson Wentz, the leading candidate for NFL MVP in just his second year, suffered a season-ending torn ACL. That’s truly a shame as Wentz had been such fun to watch. He leads the NFL with 33 touchdown passes, which already is a franchise single-season record. Needless to say, the Eagles’ game odds for the rest of the regular season and into the playoffs as well as their futures odds are going to be dramatically different behind backup Nick Foles. He was spectacular as a full-time starter in 2013 with 27 TD passes and just two picks under Chip Kelly in Philly, but that was a fluke season if there ever was one. The Eagles can clinch home-field advantage throughout the NFC playoffs with a victory at the Giants and a Vikings home loss to Cincinnati, which is unlikely. The Eagles clinch at least a first-round bye with a victory. Wentz, incidentally, might not even be ready to start next season as he’s looking at 9-12 months of rehab. Just a shame. If the Eagles were playing most other teams, I’d take the underdogs here but the Giants suck. Buy that spread down, though.

  • Eagles are 13-5-1 ATS in their last 19 meetings.
  • Giants are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 home games.

When the playoffs roll around, begin Wentz will become just the third quarterback to win 11 games but not start a postseason game, joining Phil Simms in 1990 and Oakland's Derek Carr last season. The 1990 Giants went on to win the Super Bowl behind backup Jeff Hostetler, while the Raiders fell to the Texans in the wild-card round. I expect the Eagles to rely more on their running game going forward. That unit averages 143 yards per game, second in the NFL. Jay Ajayi is averaging seven yards per attempt since being traded from Miami to Philly. LeGarrette Blount is always a beast. Foles is hoping to have star tight end Zach Ertz this week. After the Eagles stated Ertz cleared concussion protocol, they backtracked quickly. He ended up missing their Week 14 game against the Rams. The Giants returned Eli Manning to the starting QB role last week after a one-week benching but they still lost 30-10 at home to Dallas. Manning will start again this week. The Giants lost in Philly in Week 3, 27-24, as Eagles rookie Jake Elliott kicked a 61-yard field goal as time expired. That was the longest game-winning kick in NFL history by a rookie.

  • Under is 4-1 in Eagles last 5 games following a straight up win.
  • Under is 8-2 in Giants last 10 home games.
