The Panthers and Saints looked like very different teams when the met Week 3. Drew Brees & Co. go for the season sweep. Survivor Pick: New Orleans.

Carolina Panthers at New Orleans Saints (-4, 48)

In Week 3, the Saints went to Charlotte with the NFL’s worst defense and off one-sided losses to Minnesota and New England. Carolina entered 2-0 off dominating defensive wins over San Francisco and Buffalo. Naturally, the Saints rolled to a 34-13 victory to probably save their season. Drew Brees threw for 220 yards and three scores. That New Orleans defense intercepted Cam Newton three times and sacked him four times before he was replaced late in the fourth quarter. Carolina won its fourth straight last Sunday, rallying for a 35-27 victory at the Jets. Newton was mostly contained by the Jets' defense, finishing 11 of 28 for 168 yards along with 28 yards rushing -- including a 1-yard TD -- on nine carries. New Orleans had its eight-game winning streak snapped in a 26-20 loss at the Rams – no shame there with how good NFC West-leading L.A. is this year. One week after rallying from 15 points down late in the fourth quarter to beat Washington in overtime, the Saints fell behind on the opening drive and never caught up. Rookie Alvin Kamara had another great game with 188 yards from scrimmage and two TDs. He’s your Offensive Rookie of the Year favorite now.

  • Panthers are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 meetings.
  • Saints are 7-2 ATS in their last 9 games overall.

Something has to give here as New Orleans has the No. 2 ranked offense in the NFL (409.4 yards per game) while Carolina boasts the league’s No. 2 ranked defense (288.3 yards allowed per game). One of my co-writers here at SBR, Jay Pryce, had some very interesting numbers regarding this game in one of his stories this week: “The ‘over’ is 13-4 (77 percent) when Cam Newton leads the Panthers on the road in a game with a total above 47 points. In those 17 contests, the Panthers or their opponents have put up 30 points or more in all but two in this situation. The combined score has been 62.4.” Some injuries to note. Panthers top receiver Devin Funchess and tight end Greg Olsen both were banged up vs. the Jets but should play. Meanwhile, Saints starting cornerbacks Marshon Lattimore (ankle) and Ken Crawley (abdomen) sat out at the Rams. It’s not clear if either will play vs. Carolina as of this writing. Lattimore has been spectacular as a rookie.

  • Over is 5-1 in the last 6 meetings in New Orleans.
