It’s one formerly bad Jacksonville quarterback against one currently bad one when the Jags and Cardinals square off in the desert. Survivor Pick: Jacksonville.

Jacksonville Jaguars at Arizona Cardinals (+4.5, 38)

In the 2011 draft, the Jaguars selected Missouri quarterback Blaine Gabbert with the No. 10 overall pick. Frankly, the team threw Gabbert to the wolves way too quickly and he became a mega-bust. But then so did two other first-round quarterbacks that year: Tennessee’s Jake Locker (No. 8 overall) and Minnesota’s Christian Ponder (No. 12). The only first-round QB who worked out was the No. 1 overall pick by Carolina, a guy named Cam Newton. Incidentally, the pick after Gabbert was a defensive end out of Wisconsin named J.J. Watt by Houston. Oops! Gabbert gets the start against his former team for Arizona. With Carson Palmer likely done for the year and Drew Stanton dealing with a knee injury, Gabbert made his first start of 2017 last week in a 31-21 loss to Arizona. He wasn’t too bad actually, completing 22 of 34 for 257 yards, three TDs and two picks. “What I saw is exactly what I thought I’d see,” Arians said. “I just think it’ll get better the more he throws to Larry [Fitzgerald]. He’s someone who’s never thrown to Larry and those starting guys. So as he gets a little more timing with them, I think he’ll just get better.” Stanton still isn’t ready. Blake Bortles’ Jags lead the AFC South and are off a win in Cleveland. Jacksonville has been a great road bet of late.

  • Jaguars are 7-1 ATS in their last 8 road games.
  • Cardinals are 5-15-1 ATS vs. a team with a winning record.

There will be one fascinating individual matchup Sunday and that’s future Hall of Fame receiver Larry Fitzgerald of the Cardinals against young Jacksonville superstar cornerback Jalen Ramsey – the Jags have easily the No. 1 pass defense in the NFL. In last week’s loss to Houston, Fitzgerald had nine catches for 91 yards and a touchdown. He now has 15,157 career receiving yards, passing Tony Gonzalez (15,127) for the fifth-most receiving yards in NFL history. Fitzgerald and Jerry Rice (19,247 with San Francisco) are the only players in NFL history to reach 15,000 career receiving yards with a single team. I’m not confident the Cardinals will score much on that Jacksonville defense. And I’m never confident in the Jags’ Bortles. He did just enough not to give the game away against the Browns. Bortles will play in University of Phoenix Stadium for the first time since his final collegiate game at Central Florida, a 52-42 victory over Baylor in the Fiesta Bowl on Jan. 1, 2014.

  • Under is 4-0 in Jaguars last 4 games overall.
  • Under is 13-3 in Cardinals last 16 home games.
