It’s somewhat fitting that the Bills and Chiefs face off on Sunday because they arguably had the worst two results in Week 11. Survivor Pick: Kansas City.

Buffalo Bills at Kansas City Chiefs (-10, 45)

As I write this story, Buffalo Bills coach Sean McDermott hasn’t announced his starting quarterback in Kansas City. If it’s not Tyrod Taylor, McDermott should be fired immediately. The first-year coach made the very odd decision to bench Taylor, who has pretty good numbers not to mention the lowest interception rate in NFL history (yep, it’s true), for fifth-round rookie Nathan Peterman this past Sunday at the Chargers. Uh, it didn’t go well. Peterman was clearly overwhelmed, getting picked off five times in the first half before being mercifully yanked at intermission for Taylor. Peterman became just the fifth quarterback in NFL history with at least five interceptions on fewer than 15 passes in a game. He joined the Saints’ Archie Manning (1973), the Pittsburgh Pirates’ Johnny Gildea (1937), Boston Redskins’ Pug Rentner (1935) and Giants’ Harry Newman (1933). I’d be lying if I said I heard of any of those final three guys. The Bills lost 54-24, the most points the Chargers had scored since 1985. Yet McDermott says he has no regrets turning to the rookie. There’s simply no way he can go to Peterman in Kansas City, one of the loudest and toughest places to play in the NFL. Shoot, the Bills are still in the wild-card hunt. The Chiefs, meanwhile, had an inexplicable loss at the NY Giants.

  • Bills are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 meetings in Kansas City.
  • Chiefs are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games overall.

To be fair to McDermott, who is on control of personnel, benching Taylor was a move that was more about learning if Peterman was an option in 2018 not to go the playoffs in 2017. Even McDermott said simply going to the playoffs should not be the team's goal. He’s lucky he has job security. Remember when the Chiefs were 5-0 and looked like perhaps the NFL’s best team? They have dropped four of five since and looked horrendous in a Week 11 12-9 overtime loss at the putrid New York Giants. Andy Reid-coached teams had been 16-2 coming out of a bye week as Kansas City was and he had never lost to a club with a losing record in that scenario. Alex Smith was picked off twice – he didn’t throw a TD pass for the first time in 2017 -- and so was tight end Travis Kelce on a trick play. Actually, the Chiefs' Daniel Sorensen intercepted a pass by Giants RB Shane Vereen. Thus Chiefs-Giants became only the second game in the Super Bowl era in which each team threw an interception by a non-quarterback. The other game was a 30-19 Broncos win over the Chargers on Nov. 11, 1973.

  • Over is 5-0 in Bills last 5 games overall.
  • Over is 4-1 in Chiefs last 5 games following a straight up loss.
