Bragging rights in the Sunshine State are on the line Sunday as Tampa Bay make a rare regular-season visit to Miami. The winner here is unofficial state champion for 2017 since neither plays Jacksonville. NOTE: Game moved to Week 11 due to Hurricane Irma.

Usually it’s to the advantage of a Florida team to play at home this time of year in the heat and humidity, but that obviously won’t help the Dolphins against the in-state Bucs. Survivor Pick: Tampa.

The Jay Cutler Era begins in south Florida .... if Hurricane Irma stays away. Cutler was supposed to be in Chicago on Sunday, not as the Bears’ quarterback but as part of the Fox TV broadcast team with Atlanta in town. However, when the Dolphins lost starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill early in training camp to a likely season-ending injury, Coach Adam Gase called Cutler and lured him out of retirement. Cutler’s best season with the Bears was in 2015 when Gase was his offensive coordinator. Cutler played just five games last year with Chicago and was a turnover machine. The Bucs have no quarterback issues and look like a rising power in the NFC South behind third-year QB Jameis Winston. They haven’t made the playoffs since 2007 but improved from 2-14 in Winston’s rookie year to 6-10 in 2016 and 9-7 last year.

  • Buccaneers are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 road games.
  • Dolphins are 6-13 ATS in their last 19 home games.
  • Dolphins are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games in September.

While both teams are used to the heat with training camps in Florida, it still could take a lot out of them. This will be the Tampa Bay debut of receiver DeSean Jackson, the team’s big free-agent acquisition from the Redskins. With Jackson’s addition, the Bucs play to throw more deep balls this year. Tampa is without starting running back Doug Martin the first three games due to suspension. It could take Cutler a while to get in sync with his offense considering he wasn’t planning on playing again so I expect a sluggish offense. The Dolphins are opening the regular season at for the first time since the 2014 season. Miami and Tampa Bay have split their 10 games dating back to 1976.

  • Under is 5-1-1 in Buccaneers last 7 games overall.
  • Under is 8-2 in Dolphins last 10 games in Week 1.
