NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has gone on record saying he doesn't think teams in the NFL tank. Has he not seen what the New York Jets did this offseason? Gang Green opens what will be a long season in Buffalo.

New York Jets at Buffalo Bills (-6.5, 42.5)

The Sean McDermott Era begins in Buffalo with perhaps the best possible opponent for the Bills' new head coach to start his career with a victory: against the sorry, tanking New York Jets. Survivor Pick: Bills.

Many expected the Bills to hire Anthony Lynn, who closed last season as the interim coach following Rex Ryan's firing, as the full-time coach but the franchise opted to look in another direction and tab McDermott, the former Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator. McDermott was one of four coaches to interview for the Bills' vacancy, along with Lynn, Arizona Cardinals offensive coordinator Harold Goodwin and Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator Kris Richard. At a minimum, the Bills should be more disciplined as they were very much undisciplined under Ryan. McDermott is the 20th coach in the Bills' 57-year history. The team's previous eight coaches, including interim coaches Perry Fewell (2009) and Lynn (2016), all posted losing records. Buffalo has the longest playoff drought in the NFL but at least should start 1-0 – or, boy, will the faithful be against McDermott quickly. Meanwhile, Jets coach Todd Bowles is the odds-on favorite to be the first coach fired in 2017. Buffalo was 1-1 vs. the Jets last year, winning 37-31 at home in Week 2.

  • Bills are 9-3 ATS in their last 12 games in Week 1.
  • Jets are 3-7-1 ATS in their last 11 games in September.
  • Jets are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 meetings in Buffalo.

Tell me who on that Jets offense will scare a defenser? The quarterback situation is a joke with Josh  McCown winning the job. He's 2-20 in his past 22 starts. The club’s two best receivers, Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker, were released this offseason. So it’s basically Matt Forte (now a backup for the most part to Bilal Powell) and a bunch of no-names. McDermott’s Panthers defenses were always top-notch and Buffalo has talent on that side of the ball even though it lost top cornerback Stephon Gilmore in free agency. The Bills are one of the more conservative offenses in the NFL and that will eat clock and keep the score down. QB Tyrod Taylor should play after going into the concussion protocol after the third preseason game.

  • Under is 8-3 in Jets last 11 road games.
  • Under is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings.
