We all know about the “Super Bowl Curse” when it comes to the team that lost the big game. The Falcons begin their attempt to buck the curse by opening the season in Chicago.

Atlanta Falcons at Chicago Bears (+7, 50.5)

Let’s see, it’s reigning NFL MVP Matt Ryan at quarterback for the Falcons and former Tampa Bay Bucs backup Mike Glennon under center for Chicago. Easy call. Survivor Pick: Falcons.

The defending NFC champion Falcons are largely back intact from last season’s squad and are favored to repeat in the NFC South Division behind Ryan, who had a career season in 2016. Was that a fluke? Doubtful. Coach Dan Quinn’s motto for this season is “Embrace the Suck” in the wake of that crushing Super Bowl LI loss to the Patriots. No Super Bowl loser has gotten back to the game the next season since those Buffalo Bills in the early-to-mid 1990s. As for Chicago? It looks to be another long season in the Windy City and just about no one expects Coach John Fox to be back in 2018. He probably would have to win at least seven games to stay, and this roster isn’t four games better than last year’s 3-13 club. Especially after losing No. 1 receiver Cam Meredith to a season-ending knee injury in the preseason.

  • Falcons are 8-1 ATS in their last 9 road games.
  • Falcons are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 vs. NFC.
  • Bears are 0-7 ATS in their last 7 games in September.

Atlanta had the NFL’s best offense by far last season and it was one of the 10 best in league history in most major statistics behind Ryan, stud receiver Julio Jones and the running back duo of Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman. However, offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan is now the head coach of the 49ers. He could be missed, especially as his replacement is Steve Sarkisian. His tenure as Alabama’s OC lasted all of one game. The Bears have a good running back in Jordan Howard but not much else offensively. The calls from fans for rookie QB Mitch Trubisky to play are likely to start soon.

  • Under is 10-4-1 in Falcons last 15 games on grass.
  • Under is 9-4 in Bears last 13 games in Week 1.
  • Under is 7-1 in the last 8 meetings.
