In my mind, both the Arizona Cardinals and Detroit Lions are a lot alike entering 2017 in that neither has much of a chance at the postseason if its quarterback misses more than one game due to injury.

Arizona Cardinals at Detroit Lions (Pick'em, 48)

The 1 p.m. ET start time certainly doesn’t benefit Arizona, although that it comes in Week 1 might help a little in terms of adjusting. But the Lions are often tough to beat at Ford Field. Survivor Pick: Lions

Detroit hasn’t won a division title since 1993, the longest drought in the NFC. The Lions were on their way to the NFC North title last year until QB Matthew Stafford, who was having an MVP-caliber season, injured a finger on his throwing hand in a Week 14 20-17 comeback win over Chicago – Stafford’s record eighth fourth-quarter come-from-behind win last season. The Lions would then lose their final three regular-season games, coughing up the division to Green Bay, and get routed in the wild-card game in Seattle. Stafford was recently made the NFL's highest-paid player, though. Arizona slipped to 7-8-1 last year after playing in the NFC Championship Game the season before. This is probably the last hurrah for 37-year-old QB Carson Palmer and maybe 33-year-old WR Larry Fitzgerald, a future Hall of Famer.

  • Lions are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 home games.
  • Lions are 10-4 ATS in their last 14 games in Week 1.
  • Cardinals are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games overall.

When these teams last met in Week 5 of the 2015 season in Detroit, the Cardinals rolled 42-17 behind three touchdown passes from Palmer. But that Arizona team was better than this one. Stafford was benched after throwing his third interception of the game. To my knowledge, he hasn’t been benched in a game since due to injury. Both the Cards and Lions were middle of the pack in points allowed last year. Obviously no weather concerns in the dome. Thus I expect a shootout.

  • Over is 7-0 in Cardinals last 7 games overall.
  • Over is 6-0 in Lions last 6 games in Week 1.
  • Over is 5-0 in the last 5 meetings in Detroit.
