NFL Spread Betting: Rams Getting Mad Preseason Love In Preseason Week 1

LA Rams

In a world where the NFL odds are small, one team is about to discover life in the Big City. The Los Angeles Rams are moving the lines for Saturday's home debut versus Dallas.

The point spreads will get bigger, don't worry. One of the things about NFL preseason football is all these tiny spreads – three points is very common at this time of year. The games aren't necessarily competitive, especially in Week 1, so there isn't much besides home-field advantage separating these teams.

But there's an outlier on the NFL odds board for this weekend's games. The Los Angeles Rams opened at the standard –3 for Saturday's home opener (8:00 p.m. ET, ESPN) against the Dallas Cowboys; by Wednesday, the Rams were –5, earning 70 percent support on the early consensus reports. That line is back down to 4.5 points at some locations as we go to press, but most books still have –5 up on the board.

Turn Your Head and Goff
Well, it is the first NFL game in Los Angeles in over 20 years. The Rams are going to be packing them in on Sunday, opening up some of the nosebleed seats at the Coliseum. They might even top 90,000 fans. For an exhibition game.

Too bad the Rams don't have one of those head coaches that cares about winning in the preseason. Here are the career records for the two coaches in question:

Jeff Fisher, Rams: 37-40 ATS, 43-33-1 OVER
Jason Garrett, Cowboys: 6-14 ATS, 5-13-3 UNDER

Jason Garrett sees your “don't care” and raises you a “whoop-dee-frick.” He's very protective when it comes to his players, especially QB Tony Romo, who hasn't played in the first preseason game since 2012. Speaking of which, let's jump right into the QB depth charts for both teams, as per Rotoworld:

Rams: Case Keenum, Jared Goff, Sean Mannon, Dylan Thompson
Cowboys: Tony Romo, Dak Prescott, Jameill Showers, Kellen Moore (injured)

It looks like the rookie Prescott will get most of the work on Saturday. He's a fourth-round pick out of Mississippi State, where he broke all the school's passing records and was named first-team All-SEC in both 2014 and 2015. The Cowboys may or may not be looking for some veteran help for Romo – we'll see what happens against the Rams. Prescott and Showers (undrafted out of UTEP in 2015) have both had pretty good training camps thus far.

The Rams figure to give their rookie back-up plenty of burn in this matchup. Keenum is the starting quarterback for now, and expects to play two or three series against Dallas; Goff, the No. 1 overall pick from Cal, will be featured after that. He'll be pushing Keenum hard for that starting gig, and as a team, the Rams will be at least somewhat motivated to send those 90,000-plus fans home with smiling faces – and open wallets. May the prolate spheroid be with you and your NFL picks this week.
