An NFC East clash is on the cards this weekend when the Eagles and Redskins collide in the nation’s capital. We bring you a discerning analysis complete with free NFL picks.

 Eagles vs. Redskins

Philadelphia Eagles (3-1SU) look to bounce back at the expense of the hot on the trot Washington Redskins (3-2SU) on Sunday. Can Carson Wentz lift the Eagles to victory or will Kirk Cousins maintain the momentum?

If the NFL odds were any indication, the visitors appear to have the leg up. Although markets rolled out a rather coy market, setting this game on a PK line, midweek markets serve up the Eagles laying -2 points on the road. Early bettors clearly believe the Eagles are the better team, even though they are coming off a loss in week 5 and the Redskins are coming off a win in Baltimore.

That’s very intriguing, to say the least. It speaks to changing perceptions about both these teams and, more crucially, the quarterbacks. To put it bluntly, Carson Wentz is proving to be the better quarterback and he has more upside than his Redskins counterpart Kirk Cousins. Five games into the season, the NFC East isn’t playing out quite to preseason expectations by many NFL betting experts.

The crush on Wentz endured a slow build. When the Eagles made the decision to ship Sam Bradford to Minnesota and start rookie Carson Wentz in a week there were those NFL bettors that were understandably iffy about the Eagles chances with an inexperienced shot caller. When the Eagles reeled off back-to-back wins over the Browns and Bears to start the season 2-0 SU and ATS, they definitely raised eyebrows.

Still, not everyone was all in. Arguing the Eagles caught a break by getting two of the worst teams in the NFL in the first couple of weeks of the schedule. That sentiment was nowhere more so felt than in week 3 when the Eagles entered the highly-anticipated clash with the Pittsburgh Steelers as the considerable +3 home underdogs. What’s more, consensus betting polls pounded the Steelers, expecting they would give Wentz and Company a rude awakening.

Lo and behold, it proved to be the other way around to the chagrin of all and sundry. The Eagles served up one of the biggest upsets of the season as they decimated Big Ben and the Steelers 34-3 to win and cover with plenty to spare. Nothing like a win over a heavyweight to establish a team’s legitimacy.

Coming off a week 4 bye, the Eagles did finally come crashing back down to earth against an unlikely opponent. The Detroit Lions, riding a three-game losing streak and looking dreadfully woeful, entered their home clash with the soaring Eagles as the home underdogs. Indeed, the Eagles were bet up by NFL bettors in week 5 NFL picks. Tale told they edged the Eagles 24-23. Thanks to a late interception that halted the Eagles’ late surge and served up the pivotal win.

By all accounts, the Eagles burst out of the gates with all the verve and swagger of a slug and went down to the Lions by double-digits very quickly. Probably, still in holiday mode. In the second half, they did perk up. Indisputably, they were the better team but were unlucky not to complete the comeback successfully.

By comparison, the Redskins opened their season with back-to-back losses that had many calling for the benching of Kirk Cousins. The lost to the Steelers 38-16 and to the Cowboys 27-23. Cousins did rise above the criticism to lead his side to three straight wins over the Giants, Browns, and Ravens but because all three sides are struggling for various reasons there’s little takeaway in those wins. As such, this is going to be a revealing matchup about both these teams and their merit in the NFC East and in the broad spectrum of the season as well.

NFL Betting Verdict

What makes the Eagles not only the popular NFL pick but also one of the smarter week 6 NFL picks is the sum total of the team. The Eagles are better on both sides of the ball and take a 3-1 ATS mark into week 6 NFL betting that is underscored by a 16-point winning margin and a +15.8 differential versus the spread. The Eagles in total defense rank second in the league and they are one of the stingiest. Last week’s 24 points marked the most allowed through four games and it's unlikely they'll be taken unawares quite so fast soon. In all likelihood, Kirk Cousins and the Redskins are going to have a right challenge against the Eagles at FedEx Field, one they are probably not going to overcome.
